Cutting hole in back of kitchen cabinet

I need to cut a hole in the back of a cabinet big enough to fit a plug through to reach a socket - it will only be visible inside the cupboard. I can’t afford to pay someone and don’t know anyone “handy” so tips would be appreciated.

Could you take the plug off the cable, drill a small hole just for the cable and then reattatch the plug on e you have threaded it through? Less damage to the cabinet and less dust/mice can get into the cupboard. If this is the case you can just use a normal drill with a drill bit big enough for the cable and a small cross head screwed driver to disassemble the plug

Have you any tools? Drill, saw?

NotMeNoNo · 17/02/2023 12:15

If it needs to be a hole to fit the plug through, or reach the switch, you can buy a hole saw set for your drill. You can do 3 or 4 overlapping holes if necessary. If you don't have a drill, may be better to find a local handy person.

As PP said, if it's a moveable cabinet you can take the plug off, or thread the other end through.

It is so I can plug in the fridge. The previous fridge plug was threaded through a hole but the man who delivered the fridge said I would invalidate my warranty if I removed the plug to do this. Googling suggests that using an extension would be a fire hazard

Ok asked DH he does electric installations.
Alternative - Cut 4 holes with a 25mm spade bit
Then saw lines between them with pattress saw.

This gives you a neater opening with rounded corners.

This would do it in seconds and be much cheaper than a handyman amzn.eu/d/7JJWWGz

@NotMeNoNo Thank you (and your DH). That looks achievable- I will buy a pattress saw

The set from Toolstation - the biggest size is 64mm ie 6.4cm which wouldn’t be big enough to fit a plug through.

think idea of drawing a square, drilling 4 largish corner holders then sawing between the holes would be the best thing.

or if you have on, a cutting blade on a multi tool would make it a 5 min job

That looks interesting

It's not a great one, but if you only use it once - there is also a library of things where we are - you could rent one for less, it's called a multi cutter. www.libraryofthings.co.uk/catalogue/browse?query=Multi-Cutter

Sadly not one near me - but what a great idea

He was wrong. I don't know why people make up that story.

Have you got the installation instructions? Look up what they say about plugs.

Michaelmonstera · 17/02/2023 14:30

@PigletJohn Thanks - I will look
