Has anyone put a side door in their garage recently?

I'm thinking of adding a door from the garden into the brick garage. If you've done this recently can you tell me how much it cost?

About £2k, it was done as part of other work. It used to be a window so they reused the lintel. It would have been cheaper but it’s v visible from house so wanted wooden doors with glazing. A pvc door would have been cheaper. Check your insurance too. It may need a proper door with good locks. Ours didn’t and isn’t. We also didn’t get planning, in retrospect we should have done as it’s a conservation area.

Thank you, I don't think I need planning permission but better check!

We bought a door on eBay and then paid for it to be installed.

Not sure if cost as the builder included it in other work he was doing, but you can definitely reduce the cost if you buy a good second hand door.

We paid £163 for the actual door itself if that helps.

Oo that's a good idea!

I do this sort of work all the time. If there's no complications to cut through, fit lintel, fit frame and hang door + furniture and make good about £800 + materials

Does your garage have a door into your house?

I have two roller doors in my garage; one from the drive then another into the garden with a door into the laundry, therefore into the house.

If you have a door into the house it is best hung so it opens into the garage and be of exterior weight wood and a deadlock.

Thank you that's just what I needed. I didn't want to waste a builder's time if it was unaffordable

No the garage is detached. I just want a door for direct access from the garden

We have a door in our hall that opens into the garage. It’s not wooden, it’s a metal fire door as per building regs. Ours has a spring closing mechanism, it can’t be left open. Fitted by the builder.

Forgot to say it has a mortice lock and two other locking mechanisms.
Our front and back doors have a metal skin around a wooden frame.
