Has anybody ever DIY'd their own driveway ? we have a really tiny front garden that we have had all greenery removed and type 1 put down . it is big enough to fit 1 medium size car and our 2 outside bins ..
im thinking of doing it ourself not paving but 20mm gravel and a fence boarder .
in my naive head im thinking itll be easy ... what am i missing ?

You might need to check your deeds and possibly the council regarding gravel.
When we extended our driveway across (not the dropped kerb ) as part of our house extension, Our council stated that it had to be solid surface within so many feet (can’t remember the number) of the pavement and road, for safety reasons/stop damage to cars from stones being thrown up into the road when it’s getting driven on.
We were extending the monoblocks so fine.
Next door redid their drive and since they were not changing the size no permission was needed. They put chipped stones down which are always on the pavement and the road.

Also if no dropped kerb you’ll need planning permission.

Yes - it’s not a driveway without a dropped kerb - costs about £3k where I live.

We extended our drive ourselves, years ago back when we were young and fit!
It was a lot of digging out but doable. The existing drive was already gravel, we just doubled the size. Cul de sac so no issues with pp, gravel or dropped kerb.

sorry i should add their is no curb so nothing to drop .

Generally it’s best to speak to planning, if you just chuck some gravel down and park on it. You might get away with it. There are lots of rules, inc how close to a junction, what the road is like. I’d speak to the council to be fair.

There is no pavement? It’s right on the road?

pavillion1 · 14/02/2023 20:48

Nope no pavement its 8 houses on land . We all own our own plot . its semi rural

Oh then just do it…ours is somewhat similar, I mean it is an actual driveway and a private one, but we usually leave the cars on a part that is effectively just the ground covered in Pretty pea gravel.

Littleloveydovey · 14/02/2023 20:51

Sorry I’m still confused, what’s the tiny front garden bordering then? It’s not a road?

Couldn't afford block paving so put weed membrane down and then stone, have been parking cars on there for over a year.. no weeds or anything. Was heavy labour moving all the stones but so much cheaper and only took us two days to finish.

Have a look at gravel grids. That’s what I’ll be using on my drive.

emotionalpuddle · 15/02/2023 08:13

Think they said it was blue granite gravel, when washer it's a normal ish grey but then pinks and white appear through it. I'm not 100% sure as I did the driveway with my now ex and he got the stones through a farmer/dealer he worked with. I'm sorry I know that isn't much help. We did lay edging stones too to stop the stones escaping and then sleepers along the hedge bottoms! ☺️
