Help me love my Rangemaster 90

My much longed-for new range cooker, installed in new kitchen a month ago, is the Rangemaster 90 Classic Delux. It's one of those one-and-a-half size ones, with a normal size oven and grill on one side and a tall narrow oven on the other. I decided against the 110 cm one with 2 full size ovens as I thought it might dominate and didn't need 8 hob spaces on top. I freely admit I was dazzled by all the gadgets as well. As soon as it arrived I realised the bigger one wouldn't have dominated and in fact might have looked more balanced but thought the faff of arranging to send it back was too much and its still a lovely new cooker... But! The narrow oven doesn't fit any of my baking trays and tins, and I can't use the plate rack thing without taking out half the shelves. The full size oven has a handy rack thing on the door which actually just gets in the way and means I can't get to the other shelves easily. The whole kitchen was designed around this thing as a feature and I want to love it as much as I paid for it... obviously I need to get rid of the gimmicks, buy more standard shelves and trays that fit the narrow oven. Please give me your tips for what you've done to love yours!

I have had my Rangemaster 90 since 2015. I love it. I don’t use the grill much, but do use the small oven quite a bit. The oven rack I used for a short time and then took it off. Mine has a glass lid that I never use, but it does protect the wall from splashes and steam.

@LuciaPop

Very useful for basting a chicken if you are 18 inches tall

😃

CatOnTheChair · 12/02/2023 17:06

We moved into a house with an older version of this!
The door rack comes off easily. Get rid. I hate it. We just have the 2 shelves in there.
The plate rack is in the cupboard, holding all the baking sheets and trays.
Dunelm have some non-stick trays that fit the tall oven. My brownie tin also fits.
It's the tiny grill that annoys me the most. I can't fit a whole packet of bacon on it!

milkmonitor20 · 12/02/2023 18:00

I got rid of the one we had here.

Replaced it with a 90cm Smeg oven that's just one oven. Have never looked back.

CornedBeef451 · 12/02/2023 18:11

We have something very similar but an older version.

I have taken off the door rack as it seemed dangerous and bought slim trays to fit the second by oven.

We've sort of got the hang of it now but don't use the skinny top bit, I'm not entirely sure what it's for.

TeenTraumaTrials · 12/02/2023 18:22

We have just got rid of our 20 year old range master 90 as we have got a new kitchen with a fitted oven. I sooo miss my range master. We used the side oven all of the time. I had loads of trays that fitted and could cook a whole meal using it (meat/fish on one, pots/chips on another and veg on another). Never used the plate rack in the whole 20 years though. I miss my gas hob although am slowly getting used to my induction hob. I used the big ring with a saute pan to cook most dinners.

Yankeedoodlemandy · 12/02/2023 18:27

We have the bigger one and are a family of 6. We only use one oven. The other is redundant. Use 2 hobs, never used the wok thing or the plate heater so honestly I’d say the smaller one is fine.

Always4Brenner · 12/02/2023 18:30

Really miss my range cooker only a small one but ceramic hob the door opened to the side I had oven liners installed. In a couple of years time I’ll pay for a new cooker here side door opening one and ceramic hob fitted into the work units.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 12/02/2023 18:33

We've got the 100 and the tall oven is our most used. I also like the rack thing for roasts, we use it all the time.

gogohmm · 12/02/2023 18:37

I'm about to order one, I knew about the trays as my mum has one. Suits me as I have a vegetarian dd and need several shelves for different dishes

gogohmm · 12/02/2023 18:38

I took the rack out of my old 110 range

friskybivalves · 12/02/2023 18:38

I love my door rack. Have never burned myself heaving out the joint thanks to the thing everyone else has chucked in their garage or on top of the fridge. Disclaimer: not an oompa loompa, although my cast iron Le Creuset is bright orange. It fits on the despised door rack perfectly, as does a big roasted chicken/leg of lamb/topside of beef etc. Roasties underneath or in the oven on the side. And when it's nearly time to eat, the potatoes or whatever move down to the bottom of the smaller side oven while my plates warm up in the super useful plate warmer. Confused

Crumpledstilstkin · 12/02/2023 18:40

Pretty!

Granted I have the bigger one but I love it. It's such an even bake, the oven gets properly hot so pizzas are much easier, and you can do a full roast dinner in it so easily beacuse 2 ovens=2 temperatures. Have you made Yorkshire puddings in it? Revelation, so easy.

I also actually really like the door think but it's definitely a love it or hate it one. I just cook whatever in it and then bung the tray in the dishwasher after. It's really handy for anything you want to see when cooking as you just put the light on and can see how it's doing without opening the door. You can also adjust the heights of shelves and the door tray so it doesn't get in the way when you're cooking whatever you cook most.

Anyway, bake a few cakes and pizzas and you'll feel much better.

CoolShoeshine · 12/02/2023 22:13

Op you’ll love the slim side oven when you get used to it. Loads of trays fit lengthways.
i bung everything in the slim oven to cook and if some things are done first I put them in the other oven on low whilst the other things catch up.
it’s been a godsend to me with kids and husband who all have different food tastes (sensory related)

Labradorlove · 12/02/2023 22:27

I’ve got the 110 too and also got rid of the door rack. It felt in the way too much. Like a PP I find the 2 ovens at decent temperatures really handy. The wok thing is great as well!

bumbledeedum · 12/02/2023 22:28

I much prefer my mums 90 to my 110 (inherited with our house) because of the tall slim oven, so useful!

kittybloom · 12/02/2023 22:32

As PP have said, I got rid of the rack in main others and used baking trays lengthwise in small oven. I loved the small oven!

WishIWasACavewoman · 12/02/2023 22:55

Lightninginabox · 12/02/2023 16:21

Oh gosh I opened this with great trepidation as we only have space for the 90! And going induction at that!

Further replies have calmed me down!

Your explanation of what happens in practice with the door thing makes so much sense.

Enjoy your new range! I was v close to getting an induction but do love gas too much to give it up. The range itself is a thing of utter beauty. I hope the advice on here has restored your optimism!

@dew141 Actually I quite like my Rangemaster but my Samsung American style fridge freezer with it's tall but stupidly narrow freezer gives me the rage and I'd love it to break (I'm sorry that's not very Greta).

Hilarious, I have the same, different make, same narrow freezer which is 1/4 ice dispenser! Getting a second one in the utility room for big stuff, also not Greta...

Genius use of a redundant plate warming rack, definitely pinching this idea!

We have this too - got excellent anodised aluminium trays that fit from Lakeland.

I think it was this kind but check the width!

WishIWasACavewoman · 12/02/2023 23:18

I''m so appreciative of all the advice on here. It seems the answer is to feel no guilt about dumping the bits that don't work for me, customising the set-up, and getting some lovely new baking and roasting tins (Le Creuset, Lakeland and Falcon, I'm taking notes) that fit well.

I do wish I'd ordered the 110, but feel so much more positive that this will turn out well now. Changing it would mean refitting the units round it and replumbing the sink so much much better to love it how it is.

I do love how it looks - chunky, shiny, when-I-grow-up-I'm-going-to-be-a-steam-engine; hopefully following mumsnet wisdom I'll also love how it cooks

I’ve had mine for about 6 years now.

I used the door rack a couple of times, but then took it out - I don’t miss it! I took the plate rack out as well. Got smaller trays and dishes for the half oven. It still looks great in my kitchen, am pleased I got it. I went for the model that has a glass lid for the hob - so glad I went for that. It acts as a handy splashback when cooking. And it helps keep the hob dust-free when not in use.

Lightninginabox · 13/02/2023 07:08

@WishIWasACavewoman yes the gas vs induction was difficult for me, but I suddenly realised I have been cleaning gas stoves for 25 years. I am choosing everything for the new house on the basis of how easy it is to clean (or indeed hide the dirt, the efficient alternative) as cleaners here hard to find. Apparently when you get your head around induction it is fab but I feel a bit nervous!
