Moving back to Exeter

Is anyone here from Exeter? I've been living away from the City for about 10 years. We moved rurally (still in SW!) and now the DC are teens we're hoping to move back.

The only issue is that it appears we've priced ourselves out. Our budget is now £300k max.

We left because our beautiful mid terrace St Thomas house had two HMOs on either side. It was hell.

This really affected my MH and caused a sensitivity to noise / anxiety about mid terraces. They weren't HMOs when we bought the house so we didn't know it was going to happen :(

Can anyone recommend anywhere in Exeter or near Exeter that's affordable and a little peaceful. We don't mind small houses so a 2 bed semi will do! It's more about neighbourhood and location for us.

Once I have an idea on locations I'll set up my Rightmove alerts and get cracking with the house hunt!

Many thanks, x

You could look at applying for jobs at the uni - they likely won't hold it against you if you don't currently live in Exeter, and you might even be able to get some relocating funding for your move...

If you looking for project management jobs defra, rural payments agency and environment agency all have offices inExeter (& hydrographic office in Taunton) and all do mixed hybrid working. So worth a look.

I think where in Cranbrook is key. If you can get near the station, country park or some of the newer phases there's a bit more space, but yes, in general, it's claustrophobic. (I find a lot of new build places the same though). The estates by IKEA (Digby, Newcourt, Clyst Heath) and outskirts of Topsham (Seabrook Orchards, Dart Eve etc) have really good train and cycle links but again, I find them quite crammed in.

A 3 bed semi detached house that we liked has just been revalued for £35k LESS than it was in November!

The estate agents phoned us up before its updated online. It was unaffordable and now its very affordable!!

I'm in shock. House prices are dropping fast.

Ooh, that's exciting!

WinterMermaid987 · 13/02/2023 13:14

That reflects the 10% drop I’ve seen, we were hummin n harring about moving just as the prices started soaring in 21, but decided to sit and wait a couple more years now. Hope you can find what you want before the spring bounce. Traditionally we see more go up for sale April-July.

We enquired about another property and the EA said its been on for so long the vendors would probably accept £20k below asking. 😊

Just loving it! Off to view both properties on Friday. Both are 3 beds semi with driveways and huge gardens. And garages!

How did your viewings go @Exeterrose ? Hope you found something you like.

Exeterrose · 17/02/2023 14:57

Hey! We have been spoilt for choice with all the reductions. Just need to focus on researching schools and green spaces so we can decide exactly where to settle (we don't want to move again for a long while!) X

We've been told (by a few different people!) that Fulfords inflate their valuations and then drop house prices rather dramatically. So staying away from them as they sound like pains in the arses 😂

I’d agree 😂fulfords are crap from what I’ve seen. Hope you can find what you want.

The Met Office also have hybrid working and advertising for a marketing role at the moment.

I'm OP!

We put our move on hold as I was dreadfully ill however back on it now 💪

Can anyone recommend Crediton? I'm worried about being out on a limb and having bored kids but we also appreciate the quieter life.

I wish we could have a 50/50 split of country and city 😂

Persipan · 09/04/2023 07:12

Sorry to hear you've been unwell.

So, I've been in Crediton for a few months now and I like it but I have no idea what it's like for teenagers (my small person has a decade to go before I need to think about that). Off the top of my head there's a leisure centre for sporty stuff, a youth theatre group at the arts centre if they're that way inclined, and it's easy to get to Exeter on the bus for the cinema, shops etc, so I can't think they'd be completely lacking opportunities to do stuff but I can't speak to the teenage experience from my own knowledge, iyswim. Aren't you quite rural now, though? Not sure what they have available to them already as to whether this stuff would be sufficiently diverting!

There's a list of stuff here: https://www.creditoncongregational.org/youthcrediton that might help?
