Where to live south Manchester/Cheshire?

Hello! I’ve been having a good trawl of previous posts but can’t find one that fits my question.

We are looking to get more acquainted with areas of Cheshire to move to in 1-2 years. I’d love to hear of your thoughts and experiences. These are our desired traits:
House:
-4/5 bedroom detached with garage and garden
-around the £550k mark

The area should be fairly safe and good to bring kids up in. We are currently moving from Prestwich in North Manchester because of this. We would like somewhere that’s on the train line to get into Manchester if needed (we both work from home), with good primary schools but in catchment areas for excellent secondary schools (this could also be private).

Bonus for anywhere that has a tennis club, fairly rural and has things to walk to. A Waitrose is also a request from my partner, haha. Also within 45 min of the airport.

we have been eyeing up places like Poynton, Macclesfield, Bollington. Any thoughts?

Also 30 minutes to Liverpool and Manchester airports from Frodsham/Helsby.

I grew up in Macclesfield too waves to everyone else. We lived opposite the hospital and then out on Prestbury Road. Looking back it was a lovely place to grow up/be a teenager as you could walk everywhere and it was quite safe, lots of parks. This was the late nineties though, I don't know how it compares now! I went back recently and the town centre is very sad.

Trafford is insanely expensive & I say that as someone who lives here. We stay because all of our family and friends are here but it does frustrate me that just 20 mins out we could get so much more.
I'd look holmes chapel/davenham/Hartford way.

We stay for the same reasons, I'm desperate for more space but don't want to saddle myself with a massive mortgage for a pretty standard house.

What about Whaley Bridge? Trains every half an hour in the mornings.

@Lollygaggle I came on to say I was surprised no one has mentioned Frodsham, I've also had my eye on that house since it came onto the market!

We moved to the area a few years ago and love the mix of rural and having stuff on your doorstep

Fifi00 · 15/02/2023 02:26

Hartford , for the train station but the traffic is dire or perhaps even Cuddington if you like rural but still closish to amenities there's also the train line. Theres a Waitrose in Northwich town centre.

Thank you to each and every one of you for taking the time to comment on here - I've got lots of great suggestions. We actually went down there on Sunday to have a look around. Hearing stories of nursery waiting lists would also be helpful - here in Prestwich I put my DS' name down for our nursery as soon as we knew we were expecting. We still had to wait until he was 8 months old to be able to get him in, waiting lists were so long.

We started off with Holmes Chapel. It seemed lovely, but not much of a village centre? I'd have to look into what there is to do around there. The feel of the place was spot on, the train, etc. I just need to find the time to check on activities for DS as he grows.

We then went along the lanes to somewhere near Sandbach, but didn't get to the actual village centre. We shall be doing that this week. For those of you that live in actual Sandbach, how easy is it to get to the train station, all the way in Elmsworth? I need to caveat that I hate driving with a passion in the UK (wrong side of the road for me). I'm happy to walk 30 minutes.

It looks like Altringham and Knutsford and Lymm would be slightly out of budget (plus paying for a postcode). We are looking to move in the next 1-2 years though.

We drove through Congleton and Macclesfield, but they looked like quite industral cities? Not sure if it's just the areas where we drove past. It's hard to know, isn't it? Lots of hourses in Tytherington, but I don't think there's a trainline.

Next on our list is Nantwich and Sandbach!

We live in audlem a small village a few miles from Nantwich and apart from the Waitrose it ticks all the boxes such an amazing community, couple of pubs, boots, coop, deli tennis courts takeaway etc we are a 5/10mins to Nantwich (which is also amazing) and 20 mins from Crewe if you can manage to 20 min drive to Crewe for the train (there are also buses to Crewe) then look at audlem great schools, nursery’s and private schools nearby too

Vanillazebra · 15/02/2023 05:32

Congleton, Macclesfield or sandbach

It's a small world, I had family on Prestbury Road. My uncle lived in Langley, grew up in one house, married and moved to the house next door, divorced and moved to the house next door to that. It still makes me smile when I see the three houses in a row,

mac1974 · 16/02/2023 20:14

@userxx I always stalk Rightmove but there's nothing worth moving for within the area plus the stamp duty is enough to put a stop to any thoughts to any potential move within the area. Fortunately we do love our house but it must be so difficult for young families.

I live in Altrincham and I hate it. I wouldn’t recommend it at all. There is also no way you would get a 4-5 bedroom detached property here for your budget. More likely a 2 bed terrace with no parking and a small garden.

Why do you hate it ?

I also think Holmes Chapel might fit the bill - it's not got a large centre but there is a strong community spirit and there are a few nice shops, some good pubs and restaurants and 3 very good schools. The tennis club is small but friendly and their are a couple of nice gyms. There's a good selection of sport/dance/art clubs for kids, The Dane valley walk on the outskirts of the village is lovely and Sandbach Waitrose is only about a 10 minute drive! The train station is central to the village and has direct trains to Manchester and Crewe.

For your budget you could get something like this www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/129930653

Iusedtobedontcall · 17/02/2023 09:52

It is lovely in HC - I think the small village is fine because it’s so well connected. You can get the train to Alderley Edge or Wilmslow and go out there quite easily. And there are loads of nice walks. It depends what you’re looking for though.

ChatSamosa · 17/02/2023 17:32

Oh god, particular supermarkets are pre-requisite now?!

I've just sold in Cheadle Hulme, 3 bed semi for £480k and moved to...north Bury (Greenmount) I fancied a Sainsbury's but closest is Prestwich, I think Greenmount/Ramsbottom is actually missing a Waitrose.

AngelaH7030 · 22/01/2024 11:32

Hi, bit late to this but wondered if anyone could give me any advice on Macclesfield. My husband works there but we currently live in Stockton Heath Warrington and looking to move. I'm a bit hesitant to move as I grew up in Warrington and love Stockton Heath so very familiar with the place but husbands commute too long and tbh im not sure i want to bring my son up in Warrington. I have a 21 month old so want to know what it is like in maccs, where are best places to live around Macclesfield that is nice and safe to walk around. (Nice scenary etc) quite like look of Langley. Where are good nurseries and primary schools and Where's good for toddler groups. Sorry for all the questions!

sep135 · 22/01/2024 12:08

My extended family grew up in Langley. I loved going there, it's really pretty with the hills around, plus there's the forest/reservoir and some nice houses. We've had some lovely walks in the Hollins and Teggs Nose park.

Macclesfield is perhaps more of a mixed bag but I like the brooding industrial look of the mills.

MrsRachelDanvers · 22/01/2024 13:33

How about Frodsham? Market town with good schools, lovely countryside and lots going on. It’s a lovely welcoming community with one of the best restaurants in Cheshire. Nearest Waitrose is Chester. On direct lone to Manchester Airport, Manchester and Liverpool and easy drive to airport-as long as not full rush hour. You can get a good house

AngelaH7030 · 22/01/2024 15:27

Is it quite safe then walking about? Where would you say are the dogey areas (if there are any)

Carnerloyle · 22/01/2024 19:02

I like Tytherington, the Buxton Road area, by the hospital and Bollington best.
