Kitchen Makeover

Anyone any experience of those companies that put new doors on old kitchen?

I got one to come to give me a quote which for making made to measure doors, new hinges, new worktops, all the tiling, removing all the old stuff and taking away was £10,500 which was more than I bargained for as the cupboards are already there so it’s not like it’s a new kitchen. I was thinking around the £6000 mark or am I just being tight?

I’m not really sure of what you’re asking. Unless you’re negotiating with them it is irrelevant how much you think it should be?

well clearly she's asking what other people paid for the same service and if this is the going rate. or if she's right to be surprised at the price.

Exactly this. It is not a new kitchen, it is just replacing new doors on old cabinets that are already there- it seems steep to me but no I am not trying to haggle with them.
Any companies that you would recommend.

Sounds like more or less a new kitchen apart from the appliances.

handslikebirds · 10/02/2023 16:22

Ours was about £6k but didn't include worktop or tiles. Just new doors, removing some cupboards and a new sink and tap. It looks amazing and such good quality, would definitely recommend.

£10k does seem a lot for only doors.

I've just finalised a new kitchen with Magnet and it's £14k for all the cabinets including a glass fronted dresser, a couple of curved units (which tend to always be pricy), plus a large cupboard unit (17 cabinets in total, some big, some small, in their Ludlow timber shaker door range). But no appliances or worktops for that price, they are on top.

Worktops can be cheap as chips or second mortgage territory on their own - so that is a big variable - what worktops did you choose?

But there's so much smoke and mirrors on kitchen pricing... I went via our builders so it's the trade price and a lot is discounted by 70% on list price) - which makes the list RRP absolutely bonkers...

We used Howdens last time in our previous house, about twelve years ago, again via our builder so with the trade discount, which he was happy to pass on (not all do). I think that was about £11k back then. Again solid timber shaker style. Which is pricier but really lasts. Our old kitchen was still looking fab 12 years on (and withstanding one enthusiastic toddler/climber/biker round the kitchen !)

I have just paid 10,600 for a brand new kitchen, worktops plastering, electrics etc.... including a new oven and inbuilt microwave. It sounds steep for the new doors etc....

spiderplantparty · 10/02/2023 19:01

How big is the kitchen? If you give us an idea of how many doors etc it may help to say if it is expensive or not.

We paid £2400 for new worktops, new sink and taps and about four new doors four or five years ago. That wasn't all the doors, just the ones that needed replacement. I did think it was a bit steep at the time but was struggling to find a tradesman in our area that would take on a small job rather than a whole kitchen refurb. It did look great when it was finished and I've been pleased with the work.

I had my kitchen units sprayed by a professional company cost about a grand. They were absolutely dire before, and look brand new now. Could be an option

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/02/2023 19:13

How big is your kitchen.
How much is "all the tiling"?

Our kitchen is about 12x12 feet.

3 double doored base units (inc the one that holds the sink & drainer), a single cupboard, 4 drawer stack and a tower holding oven in the middle with a cupboard top and bottom.

Tiling about a foot high around two of the walls.

Would you be willing to post a couple of photos of your kitchen? It might help people give more helpful suggestions.

No way would I be paying that for new doors. I’d balk at that for a whole new kitchen, but I know I’m a skinflint!

CupEmpty · 11/02/2023 10:08

That seems insane to me. It would be cheaper if you source it yourself and just get a local joiner/ kitchen fitter to do? Try DIY kitchens for doors etc
