Considering a new home which will have a long galley style kitchen. I would love an island so wondering what would be the best kitchen layout without compromising on cupboard space?

I think unless the kitchen goes into the larger half of the room (getting rid of the double doors at the bottom) and the table goes in the smaller section, I don't think there is space for an island.

Can you post a pic of the whole floor not cropped. It's easier to get a better perspective. What are the approx dimensions?
What are your must have furniture items in that area?

Thanks for replies. I have attached full floor plan and dimensions. We would really only need a dining table in this space as there are plenty of other sitting areas.

Can you shorten one length of the galley and have a peninsula at the end of the other side?

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 10/02/2023 12:58

You need a minimum of 1m each side of the island for it to be comfortable to use. I have seen one with 900mm and it was tight and a squash. Will you have that as it doesn't look like it from the plan.

Do you need 3 rooms to sit in?

I would put the dining room in the bottom left living room.

Move the kitchen to the dining area. Long units and sink under the window. And an big island.

Kitchen space could then be a small living area/snug

No we really don't need 3 rooms to sit in 🙈 I like the idea of moving kitchen over to dining area which would give more space for an island. Thank you for the ideas!

Second the idea of moving the kitchen. What you've got now isn't an actual galley kitchen, just a U-shaped kitchen. I had a galley kitchen in an earlier life and loved it because it was so snug and practical- all you had to do was turn around to have everything in reach. This one just has a lot of dead space in the middle. If you move the kitchen entirely you can sort of recreate a galley setup with the island as one side of it.

I’d block the existing doors between the living room and dining room, use the dining room as the kitchen where you’ll have 2 walls for units and space for an island, dining table in the existing kitchen and then the living room can be a snug/playroom/office.

Thank you, I really like this idea 😀 we weren't sure about having double doors in to the living room and double doors in to the sun room (think we will remove those anyway) so this would be ideal

Given that there's 30million sitting rooms, I'd open the front bottom room into the dining room and use the whole space as a massive kitchen/diner/sofa family room. It would leave you plenty of choice for a space for an island.

Keep the separate sitting room as a grown up evening room.

Your cloakroom and utility is tiny. Make the cloakroom the whole of that space. Then use a section of the kitchen for a laundry room. Or vice versa would work too so laundry room had external door. You could make a through section in the old kitchen for coats, boots and storage if you put the cloakroom there and had the old one as the laundry.

Use the whole of the dining, lounge and garden room for cooking, sitting and eating. leave old sitting room as it is!!

I agree the utility is very small, I thought I could make do and use space under the stairs for shoes/coats etc. If we decide to move the kitchen in to the dining area I would be tempted to increase the utility in to existing kitchen to allow more room for washing 😅

I have my laundry room completely separate from the kitchen. If has a big sink with a plumbed in draining board, hanging space, wine fridge (?), stacked dryer over washer in bespoke sturdy cupboard and then worktop with recycling containers under and boot storage space. Plenty of cleaning storage too. This means your kitchen is a cooking and socialising zone. It means you get the whole of the cleaning stuff out of the way. You might need to think carefully about where the cloakroom can go but I would separate it from the laundry and back wall so it stands alone. If you use the kitchen for the laundry you have to go through it to get to the cloakroom and back door. Is that practical?

Lots to think about. I would like separate laundry room, don't mind having to go through kitchen to get to it. At least it will be all contained behind a door. Will hopefully speak with builder this week to get his thoughts
