Can't find anywhere to live!

I'm not sure if I'm looking for advice or just desperate to vent

Looong story short... rented a place for years, got out of debt, saved for a deposit, landlord sold up, deposit wasn't enough to buy anything in the area yet (live on an island so limited) moved into a winter let, still saving, the world went mad and mortgage rates went stupid, winter let is about to end, can't find a rental.

So, me, the other half, the 10yr old and the geriatric dog are about to be homeless.

I've just booked a week in a caravan, the following week in a 'glamping' tent, the week after that in a caravan, another week in a different caravan park, 3 nights in an airbnb and a 10 night stay in a holiday chalet. I don't know what to do!
We both work full time, I'm trying so hard not to touch our deposit savings, but realistically we can't keep moving from place to place every week.

Starting to think we should give up on the idea of buying altogether. But then again, that wouldn't mean we could magically find a rental, there just aren't any out there right now.

And i feel like a sh*t mum because it's hardly a stable environment for the little one moving around every five minutes.

I'm so cheesed off that we've wound up in this position. We work 80/90 hour weeks and can't put a decent roof over little one's head, it's insane.

Please tell me I'm not screwing the kid up for life by having her live out of a suitcase for the foreseeable future?

And please tell me the housing market is going to fix itself eventually because right now it's bleak

Any tips for surviving the next few months of caravans, tents and madness?

Thank you x

If there really isn't anywhere to buy you need to look at renting!

This is absolutely outrageous. We give illegal immigrants more help and support than you will receive, I'm so upset about how our country has become. They are bending over backwards, supporting people illegally entering this country yet aren't helping their own people when they need it.

You need to contact the council because you're homeless.

I don't know how it'll play with you going on holiday and being homeless from there. Because you left the tenancy rental without being evicted by bailiffs they might say you're voluntary homeless, which means they don't have to help you. What you should have done is stayed in your home, paid rent still and waited to be formally evicted by the courts. If you haven't left yet, speak to the charity Shelter, regardless of what you've paid out for holidays or promised the landlord, you may be better off staying put.

You've nothing to lose by applying to the council. Tell them you're homeless, living in a caravan park holiday rentals, answer their questions, hope for the best.

The DC can't be street homeless, as you're working it'll be cheaper to house you with her than put her in foster care. I really don't know what happens in those circumstances.

The council may put you in somewhere temporarily that's utterly grim, it's pot luck what's available in your area. There's unlikely to be room for your possessions so look to put those in storage, if you can afford it, sell them if you can't. Temporary housing can mean a wait for upto 10-20 years for permanent, it depends on your area. Some areas it's months not years. You might want to consider what you can afford to buy/rent in other areas of the UK if staying in your local area doesn't work out well for you.

Consider where your post is going when you're in holiday rentals. You don't want bank statements or other sensitive financial details going to your old place in case the new people are less than honest. Do you have any friends who will let you use their address for post until you're housed?

The housing market is about to come crashing down as sales aren’t really going through as much now with the cost of living crisis so some rentals may well start opening, albeit temporary as landlords are still wanting to sell up. Can you ask if the landlord will allow you to stay at the winter let a little longer? Some people aren’t really going on holiday this year so they may prefer to have the cash coming in because of this reason. Also have you approached other winter lets and explained your situation? The fact that you are leaving when you should may make them feel better about allowing a temporary let as you aren’t waiting on bailiffs etc. wasn’t sure there was a contract for a winter let so quite difficult to wait for bailiffs as I thought it was a holiday let. Have a look at some of the houses for sale in your area and see what has been on the market for the longest, ask estate agent if landlord is willing to offer a temporary let and explain situation and that you are aware landlord will be selling and you would have to vacate upon this.

Do work commitments mean you must live in a specific area?

MaverickGooseGoose · 10/02/2023 05:27

Presumably having booked those options you live in a holiday area? Is a long term caravan rental an option?

Frenchfancy · 10/02/2023 05:33

What jobs do you do that fix you to your location? Is there anyway of getting jobs elsewhere? Very few jobs are worth being homeless for.

@notangelinajolie show me one piece of actual evidence. Because illegal immigrants aren’t given anything. Asylum seekers are but they are totally different to illegal immigrants and it is nowhere near the level of benefits afforded to those with British citizenship.

I direct you to this website so you can educate yourself before posting bollocks on threads that have nothing to do with your nasty little views.
