Lancashire coast

I’m looking for info/recommendations for coastal areas on the Lancashire coast. Must have pleasant beach/prom, interesting shops, cafes, etc, and railway station close by. I don’t know the area at all. Schools not needed. All insight and suggestions welcome so I can focus on particular places and perhaps avoid others! Thank you.

Lytham St Anne's is beautiful
Lovely beach, nice independent shops and a thriving restaurant and nightlife scene.

Augustone · 08/02/2023 14:24

Formby is really lovely and ticks your boxes.

Beachwisher · 08/02/2023 14:28

Great thanks that’s two on the list!

Southport

I thought that was rundown?

Toddlerteaplease · 08/02/2023 19:19

I was really surprised by Southport, when I went to visit the Lawn mower museum. Expected it to be rundown, but it really isn't. And only 40 min on the train from Liverpool.

HaroldTheStallion · 08/02/2023 19:21

Parts of Southport are really nice - Birkdale for example is lovely. It also has rundown areas like anywhere.

GuyFawkesDay · 08/02/2023 19:22

Lytham is lovely but ££
St Anne's is cheaper (and closer to Blackpool)
Morecambe will be an interesting spot with Eden project heading it's way.
Southport is Victorian old school seaside glam in places.

pawz · 08/02/2023 19:24

Lytham definitely!!

Not lytham st annes personally (high street is more run down, bit closer to Blackpool and generally just not as nice)

Southport (Birkdale area) is lovely.

HellcatSpangledShalalala · 08/02/2023 19:27

Lytham and St Annes are two different places, Lytham is nicer if budget allows.

Formby is also worth a look.

maximist · 08/02/2023 19:29

Further up the coast is Arnside, which is a lovely little town, or Grange over Sands at the other side of the estuary. Both have train stations.

trevthecat · 08/02/2023 19:33

Ansdell, the village (sort of) between lytham and St annes is lovely. Close to the beach, nice community feel

trevthecat · 08/02/2023 19:33

Also has a train station

Newlifestartingatlast · 08/02/2023 19:37

Formby is noce - smallish centre and a largish residential area. However, you won’t get a house with a view of beech unless it’s very tall as the sand dunes and pines block the view. So it’s flat and roads and that’s about it until you walk down to the beech

Southport is a has been seaside town. Some areas of town are scruffy and run down, and as with most places there a lot of empty shops, charity shops , nail bars etc. a great shame as the original Victorian architecture is there and a bit tunbridge well fallen on hard times. But it also has the tacky kiss me kick bit on the beech side, and everything in between. But there’s a ton of housing stock going on for miles down roads that all look the same to me (not in a bad way , just broad residential roads with a mix of Victorian, edwardian and post war houses) so I always get lost and can never find the same way twice 🤣🤣🤣.

there is Crosby which is newer to liverpool - that’s smaller and not a lot of distinct anything going for it.

Then there’s places south of Southport as suburbs that have posher reputation like birkdale and ainsdale. but again you won’t see the sea due to sand dunes

you need to realise that the whole coast from Crosby to Southport is sand, and sand dunes predominate. It is actually impossible to park along the sand dunes between south end of Southport all the way down to formby - it’s actually hard to access by anything but foot and a lot of it is SSSI - quite rightly

if you really want nicer seaside towns look at wirrel - places like Parkgate, west Kirby, hoylake are nice ish towns and you will see the sea and be able to access more easily.

I live near ormskirk. It’s prey flat and within a major market garden area all the way to coast due to its geography. But it is well placed and villages around it as goodish links to liverpool, Manchester, m6, and coast but also an hour to Lake District etc. on a clear day I can see some pennine hills so that’s nice. Formby is 20 mins from me so easy to drive over and access the beech, dunes and forest there. I don’t go to Southport much (once a year?) as would go by good links on train to liverpool .

you really need to visit-the sandy beaches look great on paper but in practice are hard to get a view of for almost all houses in the area, and can be very hard to even access

Newlifestartingatlast · 08/02/2023 19:40

Oh, should say formby doesn’t have prom - only Southport on that whole stretch from liverpool Going north till Ribble estuary - the sea can go out an awful long way 🤣🤣

Cookie79 · 08/02/2023 19:55

Having recently moved to Lytham St Annes I really like it round here. Granted I’m on a new build on the outskirts. Fab views when jets come into the airport 👀

Lytham-Lytham as I call it is very pricey. When we were looking we saw a 3 bed terrace with no parking for £450k purely due to being near the green. We have a 4 bed detached on the outskirts of St Annes for a smidge less.

I have family in Rossall and that seems quite nice. But very bungalowy which can be an acquired taste.

The trains to St Annes on the Sea… Hmm. Not awesome and you have to change at Preston for the south line so if doing a day in Manchester for example I’ll drive to Poulton or Blackpool North and park up for the better service.

I was born in Southport and now live in Tunbridge Wells so this made me laugh! I'd love to go back.

Not currently Lancashire though. But near enough Grin

Beachwisher · 08/02/2023 21:18

Happy to stray outside Lancs as long as good transport links to Manchester area. I’m welcoming all your insights!

Lytham is nicer than St Anne's and then there's Ansdell in the middle of the two which is a little village and has Fairhaven Lake, which is lovely.

ClaudiusTheGod · 08/02/2023 21:23

Are you wanting Lancashire rather than Merseyside? Formby is very much Merseyside, has the Liverpool accent rather than the Lancs accent and Southport is too, although it’s near the border and feels much more Lancs-y.

Beachwisher · 08/02/2023 21:33

@ClaudiusTheGod I don’t mind as long as I can easily get to Manchester by train. I just want to live in a nice seaside town/large village. I like both accents too!

😉😁
long time since I was in tunbridge wells - I assume IT isn’t run down - it’s only up
north where there’s no local money to keep a elegantly veranded high street 🤣🤣

Yeah, that always grows me that Southport is Mersey side - like the scousers wanted to keep all the coast and beaches right up to the rubble but leave the muck and farms to Lancashire 🤣🤣
