Deep Japanese baths

Hi hoping to install a deep Japanese style bath, small piddly bathroom and I'm a bather not a showerer. Two types seen to be available with or without seats, now sure which would be best.
Any reviews much appreciated 😀

No advice but I'm jealous - I've wanted one of these for years! I rent though so no chance for me....

tinykitchenfairy · 08/02/2023 13:57

I don't have one in my house (I'm thinking about it though!), but having used them in Japan I'd say no seat is best. Being submerged in hot water up to your neck is soooooo relaxing!

GasPanic · 08/02/2023 14:04

Don't like the look of these.

Will be expensive, cos trendy type thing.
All the mass surely concentrated over smaller surface area, so installation difficults upstairs.
Some people will like and some hate, so unlikely to add resale value to your house.
Nice if you are small and bendy, less nice if you are huge and stiff.
Hard to build in shower like normal bath so dual function limited.

Of course if you just want it and value it for your own personal use then all the above are no issues at all.

Divebar2021 · 08/02/2023 14:05

How much water do they use in comparison to normal bath? I love the look of them but I’m curious about how expensive they are to use.

Oldbutnotdead · 08/02/2023 14:25

It will be in a downstairs room, single story house so no problems with heavy overload. Separate shower being fitted, not enough room for full size bath and don't want a shower over bath.
Also future proofing for old age for the Mr getting his leg over to shower 😱😬.
Its just seat or no seat option🤔.
Might have to mock some up in cardboard boxes to try 😂😂.

I've only used the no seat version and it was lovely. I'm seriously tempted to get one when we redo a small bathroom.

Heronwatcher · 08/02/2023 15:15

I’d think a seat, as otherwise you’d have to sort of crouch? Unless you can sit completely on the floor but I’d assume you might need to be a contortionist or it might be too deep. Are there any seats which fold? So you have the best of both worlds?

GatherlyGal · 08/02/2023 16:40

We have one of these. Not exactly tiny but shorter than a conventional bath and we love it.

GatherlyGal · 08/02/2023 16:41

Hang on just seen you want to future proof. That might not work as it is very tall so not easy to get in if you have reduced mobility.

You could build in a step though

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 08/02/2023 16:56

Is it a half size, extra deep bath?

I've been in half size baths in spain and they are an absolute ridiculousness. It pisses me off every time I get in one. If it was deeper, maybe it wouldn't be so bad, but I'd go for one with a seat otherwise you'll be sat in it crouched up and it will just be annoying.

honeyandbutterontoast · 08/02/2023 16:59

I have one. Installed just before Christmas. Absolutely love it! Have the no seat type.

Unfortunately my DDs who have always hated baths also love baths in it, I was hoping it would be just mine 😂 The sensation of being submerged in it is so relaxing

TurtleTriplets · 08/02/2023 17:15

I've never seen these, do you just sit cross legged on the bottom? I am pretty small so can lie down and be fully submerged in a normal bath, would this be different?

picklemewalnuts · 08/02/2023 17:20

With seat! Otherwise it's hard to climb out.

I have fibro and desperately want one. You'll need a step outside as well. It basically makes the mobility stuff much easier. No need to attempt to stand from lying down, no need to kneel, just go from seated to standing and use the seat as a step.

goodnessidontknow · 08/02/2023 17:21

I'm coveting this one, it's a sculpted seat so like a one person hot tub, bliss!

I used to live in Tokyo and had one. They are amazing!

SlurpSlooChortle · 08/02/2023 17:26

@honeyandbutterontoast what type do you have? I have wanted one for years and we have a shower room downstairs that we never use.
We are torn between keeping as a bathroom with Japanese soak tub instead of shower or a utility room.

Simonjt · 08/02/2023 17:30

We have one, it has removable wooden seats, you could get one of those baths that has a door if you want it t be future proof for any mobility issues.

honeyandbutterontoast · 08/02/2023 17:37

@SlurpSlooChortle we have an omnitub.

DuesToTheDirt · 08/02/2023 17:45

I used to have one (in Japan) with no seat, I've never used one with a seat. I don't get how a seat would work - you'd be half out of the water, surely, and you'd get cold.

Saz12 · 08/02/2023 17:50

I loved mine when I lived in Japan. I don’t get how a seat would work though? The point is to be submerged to your neck, so with a seat they’d need to be ridiculously deep, surely?

thatshowirolllandchips · 08/02/2023 17:57

I had an Omnitub Duo. It was a 1m cube basically. Loved it. I could fit my legs flat across the bottom diagonally or two of us could fit in side by side with legs bent. I loved it. We moved out of that flat a few years ago, still miss it!

Elodie09 · 08/02/2023 18:16

Can you get these deep Japanese baths with a door and have a screen option so you could use it as a shower too?

Oldbutnotdead · 08/02/2023 18:22

I don't want a door option one, think it will take the spa look away.
I think I will be ok in latter years getting in and out and the Mr prefers a shower, think he's only had one bath in ten years. It would be him having trouble getting his leg over😂 (leaving that in😉).
The seat seems rather low in them and they are much deeper than the old hip style baths you find in the houses from the past.

I had one of these about 25yrs ago in a tiny London flat. They are amazing! Mine didn't have a seat. Waterwise, I'm sure it's not much different to a standard bath as they are obviously so much shorter.

Elodie09 · 08/02/2023 18:57

@oldbutnotdead I was just mulling over as a thought for me , haha . I have a really small bathroom but love an occasional bath !
