DS considering this for next move, priced out of Cheltenham and wants to be in commute of Bristol.
it seems affordable- is it ok?
it would be potentially a future family home.
thanks

Wotton under edge is much nicer, great community. Personally I wouldn’t live in Dursley or Cam.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 06/02/2023 20:39

Ok I’ll have a look there, thank you!

@Tial, I'm also interested in Dursley, especially after visiting and reading this: https://glosworcs.muddystilettos.co.uk/glosworcs/best-places-to-live/gloucestershire/

I'd really appreciate why it you wouldn't live in Dursley. I definitely won't be offended as I appreciate it's your own opinion and it would be extremely helpful seeing as I'm from North East London and have a basic experience of Cotswolds towns.

Don't go there, it's the place you want to escape, you are welcome in advance.

Solachan · 08/07/2023 08:04

If your after a cute, touristy Cotswold stone village..then it's not Dursley.
If you want a range of housing, supermarket, gyms schools, with nice countryside walks, golf course, views on your doorstep, close to M5 junction then it suits.
Dursleys not the best , but there is a lot worst..some of the outskirt villages are lovely, but pricey..
Just my thoughts...

NutellaNut · 09/07/2023 07:42

Following with interest as I’m also considering a move to that area. Would also like to know what the people dislike about it. Appreciate it’s not exactly a cute Cotswold town, but my budget won’t stretch to one that is! What’s Cam like, any better?

Gloschick · 09/07/2023 07:47

Echo pp, Wotton-Under-Edge much nicer. There are a lot of new builds going up in Dursley. If his budget is tight then there are worse places. You have decent facilities and cotswold way on your doorstep. Some lovely villages not far away but prob with cotswold price tags: (

gogomoto · 09/07/2023 07:53

It's ok, it's like many places, dormitories for people living in nearby cities, those wanting more space, quieter lives and access to countryside. Ive got friends in several south Gloucestershire towns/villages and all are perfectly nice places to live but aren't picture postcard - but anyone who lives in beautiful bourton on the water will tell you that living in a beautiful place comes with serious drawbacks. I'm half an hour south of there and prefer living on the coast

TheCheeseTray · 09/07/2023 07:56

Witting under edge is nice as is kingswood

iamthattree · 09/07/2023 07:59

I would echo what others say. It's practical, it's not awful, the pretty bits are round the edges. Cam is basically the same. Of course need a car. Would he be looking to take the train into Bristol as that is an annoying line in the evening as the trains only go hourly iirc.

I do find it baffling that people would wish to move there as someone who spent their teens desperate to leave! On the plus side we all learned to drive at 17 so we could take ourselves out of there. My parents are still there though and are happy (they are in a bit round the edge...)

barelyfunctional · 09/07/2023 08:13

If you’d be happy to live in a little village then there’s nice ones near Dursley. Uley and Coaley are both lovely. I grew up near Dursley and went to school there, still live near ish but completely avoid it unless absolutely necessary, it really isn’t a nice place

finewelshcheese · 09/07/2023 08:28

I know someone who lives there, and she loves it!

Everyone wants to escape the town they grew up in when they're a teenager!

Solachan · 09/07/2023 11:03

Have lived in Coaley, Wotton , Kingswood, Cam and now Nailsworth.
To commute to Bristol, Wotton ,Kingswood, or Charfield is probably the easiest.. straight down M5 then you're in north Bristol.,
Don't know where your DS needs to be in Bristol, but it's hard crossing the town during commute times.
Did the morning commute for 40 years.. normally took me 1/2 hr.

Wotton is nice, old town side of valley has the older houses and high street.
Some shops, cafes, petrol station cinema, outdoor pool..always lots going on ..
Well regarded for it's schools with KLB known for languages..
Would take Wotton / Kingswood over dursley..just my preference..

TiaI · 09/07/2023 11:29

i grew up in the area

Wotton under edge would be my choice. It’s a small town with all the basic facilities (cinema, outside pool, great secondary school, train station a short distance, great community, creative, lush countryside)

cam Dursley is practical, a bit down at the heels and improving but not somewhere I’d ever consider.

I dislike bourton on the water and bibury, tourist traps
