Correct way of doing things

Evening all - hope this is the correct place to post. I currently rent a property and have done so for around 3 years. We've just paid a holding deposit on a new property to rent

Understandably, new agent/landlord require a landlord reference from our current place.

How do I play this? I presume asking for one is me effectively handing my notice in?

Do I hand my notice in the ask for the reference?!

Also presume my "one month" notice goes from the date my next rent is due so it's actually more than a month?

I ask because I'm worried something will go wrong (no reason for it to) and that my current LL will know we are leaving

I'd recommend writing to your landlord right away, saying simply that you've been happy with your current home (if that's true!) but have decided to look for a different home (if you like, you could state work/family reasons), and would they prefer this or another email as contact point for references.
Current landlord can't evict you for looking at other places!
They might even feel a bit more informed and be able to start putting feelers out for new tenants.
Top tip - local Facebook people can give you boxes for moving, there's usually more stuff than you think!

Thank you - this makes sense and thank you for the tips!

I know I'm being overly emotional but I feel bad but I guess this is the business of renting Blush

Your landlord will probably welcome the opportunity to advertise the property at a higher rent!
Good luck in your new home xx
