Hidden pennies

I bought our first family home 3 months ago and moved in right away. We started to to do some work to the house and strangely what we found is on the ground floor, when we have ripped up the old skirting. We have found hidden pennies. Mostly 1p coin and a couple of 2p coins. In all the rooms and the hallway.
They could not have fallen in there. It's as if they where deliberately hid behind the skirting in several places.
I've never heard of such a action.
Have you heard or experienced this and why do people do this.
Oh I also found a cross hidden behind the skirting in our lounge today.

Could they have been posted there by small children?

My Dc put all sorts down our floorboards, skirting boards, drains, plugs…

I thought it was the carpenters that would put the pennies in. Not sure why- just something I heard. Some sort of trade tradition?

Sunbird24 · 05/02/2023 01:46

My parents used to own an old house that still had horsehair plaster when they bought it. As we took it off to replace it we regularly found Victorian pennies in it, I can’t remember why it was a thing but it seems to be a bit of a tradition back then

quietnightmare · 05/02/2023 01:48

It's a superstitious thing Check it on google I can't remember but google knows most things

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/02/2023 01:56

It’s supposed to bring those living in the house good luck. If you remove it, your supposed to replace it.

There is also a theory that placed over entrances such as doors/windows - bad spirits would take the money and leave the humans alone. Another idea is that bad spirits cannot cross where there is copper- and old pennies had a high copper content?

Are you sure your house isn't built on an old native American virtual ground...

FenghuangHoyan · 05/02/2023 02:07

Burial not virtual.

Kind of ruined the joke, but at least I know it's time to sleep now.

HocusPocus03 · 05/02/2023 11:31

I had an ex who did this as he was convinced it stopped spiders coming into th house, I was convinced he had mis-heard coppers for conkers but we never got to the bottom of it as to whether coppers or conkers stop spiders...

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/02/2023 14:39

@HocusPocus03 its conkers for spiders - the anti spider sprays use a very similar compound.
The best spider deterrent (imo and spider free house) is anyone of my three year old cats, apparently spiders taste like a rare treat for them and anyone who dares get between cat and spider is mince meat.

Every time we have floorboards up or something under construction, I take the opportunity to say hello to future residents in some way. Lucky charm, low hassle time capsule... why not?

Probablymagrat · 05/02/2023 18:13

Thats a really interesting find, I would imagine its a good luck/prosperity thing, coins represent wealth.

My MIL found a little 17th centuary child's shoe in the wall of her house in Scotland. She put it back, just in case it offended anything.

The only thing we've ever found was when we were doing up our last house but one, we ripped up the bedroom floor to lay central heating pipes and found an old Razzle magazine!

I bought my first house in the early 80s (yes I'm old.....). When redecorating I placed that days newspaper under the floorboards, and a screwtop jar with my name, where I came from and how much I paid for the house on some notes. I bought the house by myself, quite young and no husband - oh shocker! My mother gave me a piece of coal wrapped in ribbon on the day I moved in so I would always be warm, and my auntie gave me a new broom to sweep away any bad things/spirits. Neighbours supplied a hoover, cups and mugs, a kettle and an electric fire on the day I moved in as I had nothing apart from a bed!

Such lovely people, all gone upstairs now. Some of their children now live in the same houses.

Reader I am still in the same house and I still love it to bits. Out in a box for me.

We found some 10p pieces in the kitchen when it was being redone. The builder told me it was a good luck thing.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 06/02/2023 09:17

Money and alcohol to appease the little people is traditional in some parts. Interesting to know it's a builder/ carpenter tradition.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing.

My dd put five p pieces under my door mat as she had read it was a feng shui ( spelling?) thing. They sometimes work themselves out and helpful people pick them up and say look what I found in your porch……….
