Moving House and Broadband

Moving House and Broadband
I am moving house soon and need to change Broadband provider because my current provider does not cover my new address.

I am moving from a rural full fibre area to a town which has fibre to the cabinet, but that’s background.

Everything I can find about moving broadband seems to be about switching to a new provider at the same address to get a better or cheaper contract.

Can I order my new Broadband connection between exchange and completion, ideally to be connected remotely on the day we move.

Is it normal to have routers etc. posted to the new address for old owners to look after for us until we move in?

People are obviously doing this all the time. What part of the jigsaw have I missed?

You’ll have to cancel your existing bb with your current provider and take out new package as a new customer. You normally need anything from 5-14 days notice before it’s switched on but you can get it set up so turn on date is the day you get your keys as long as they have enough notice, I would say give as much notice as you can to the new provider and provide the date your moving in, they can accommodate this. The new router would be sent to new address so would be dependant on your sellers accepting the package.

Did this 12-months ago.
If your existing supplier can't supply you at your new address then you just start a new contract and yes, router etc will go to new address (so inform seller in advance).

The bit you've missed is this 2-3 weeks of rubbish broadband and telecoms in the new house whilst you sort it out.

.... sorry i mean "no broadband",,,,

Ours was up and running the day we moved in.
Our new supplier said it may be a day or so later but we were connected by the afternoon of moving-in day (BT / Openreach).
Couldn't fault it.

I moved a few months ago and new house didn't have a connected phone line (phone line exists but previous owner didn't use it). I've gone for a 4G MiFi (mobile broadband) instead of bothering with a cabled version. Works absolutely fine so far, TV streaming no problem ( and I take away with me when travelling). Mines a Vodafone one but you'll need to check local 4G coverage.

Thanks for your help. One of the obvious jobs in moving house is to update contact addresses, something to do online just after you really have moved.
The last time I moved was BB before broadband, when I had dial up internet. Just plug the modem into ADSL filter.

We just researched who we wanted to use and contacted them after we exchanged and booked an engineer visit to set up the day after we moved in.

We had more hassle actually cancelling our contract with our old provider (who wanted both a month's notice and ID at our new address as evidence that we had moved so we could get out of our contract early as they didn't supply our new address - we had to point out to them that wasn't acceptable and they accepted a copy of our exchange contract eventually).

If your existing provider cannot supply you at your new address then you need to cancel with them (at no penalty to you) and order a new connection with your new provider at your new property.

I would advise against ordering a new broadband connection to be delivered on the very day you complete on the house though. Order it after you move in and use 4/5G (maybe a hefty payg sim from Giff Gaff or similar if you don't have a contract) as a stopgap in the meantime.

We were out of contract and set up one of the ‘always on’ contracts where if broadband is out you use 4G. They came out to sort it a week or so after we moved (I’d been WFH as usual) and I was genuinely astonished to find we’d been on 4G. Was fantastic!

Cancel old contract

Sign up to new contract with installation date asap after move. If they won’t give you an engineer to install it then you may nd old owners to look after the new router yes.

Make sure you give the ne provider enough notice!! We ended up without broadband for a month because thy antd crazy amount of advance notice. In lockdown, when everyone was home edding and working from home. 🤦‍♀️

When we moved 5 years ago we found we couldn’t get our existing open reach company (or any other) to cover our new address for 6 weeks as they needed to book in line work from the exchange ??????!!!!!????? 🙀

We searched around and found we could book that nice Mr Branson’s company to run in a new cable and connect the day after completion so thats what we did. Their engineers came along with all the kit required.

Another option we researched was getting a mobile interwebby hub thingy ie 4/5G that we could connect IPads / Laptops to via Wi-Fi and go from there. These are available / were available from all good mobile providers. This was tempting but we got a good deal re the cable TV etc & got the above mentioned next day connection.

After a year of that nice Mr Bransons product the renewal price went through the roof so we switched our account at our leisure and now have TV, phone & webbynetty from that nice Mr Murdoch.

I would suggest you look at all options & go from there.

Good luck

Thanks for the suggestion about GiffGaff. I already use GiffGaff for my mobile.
So I can just tether my laptop to my mobile for a few days until the new broadband is connected?
And make sure I have enough data allowance on the mobile!!

I got the router delivered on the day I moved in (Friday), and then on the Monday the company came to connect the wifi. I ordered this about ten days in advance.

fyi the company engineer can still connect you if your router hasn’t arrived yet too. For them it is just about the phone line etc

Yep if you already have that in place I would just do that, but definitely make sure you have enough data on your goodybags.
