Are these fitted wardrobes worth anything? (pics incl)

I'm use a wheelchair or frame indoors and there's not enough room around the end of the bed for my wheelchair/frame. I have a hospital style electric bed which is longer than a standard bed (It's a single bed). (The bed in the photo is not my bed).

I don't need the storage space and would rather have more floor space. (The door you can see is an en suite.

I was thinking of advertising them on Facebook for someone local. But they would have to remove themselves as I can't. I was going to ask for something like £100-£150? Do you think that is reasonable, or should I offer them for FREE?

They're good wardrobes but I never bought them. If I could get a few quid for them everything helps in these expensive times, I'm on a very low income.

Truthfully, they’re old fashioned in style and really only suited to upcycling. I think you are unlikely to get any takers to both remove them and pay you BUT there’s no harm in trying on Facebook marketplace if you are prepared to wait a while.

mrsm43s · 03/02/2023 11:50

You can but try, but in my neck of the woods you'd have to pay someone to remove them. People can't give away dated furniture for free, let alone sell it.

I'd be budgeting one day's handyman time, plus small skip hire to have them removed and disposed of.

Moonlightsonatas · 03/02/2023 11:53

It’s a lot of work if you want paying and someone to remove them.

As they are fitted they would have to have a bedroom that is the same size as yours.

I think this is the biggest problem. What are the chances that someone will like that style, have a room the right size for the wardrobes and be arsed to pay to remove them? You don't lose anything by trying though.

FlyingDuster · 03/02/2023 14:52

Thanks guys I understand. I will list them for FREE on Facebook, saying they need to be removed by the person who wants them. If nobody wants them I will try and find a local wardrobe fitter or handyman and just have to pay them to remove them.

Also one other thing. The carpet under the wardrobes is patterned whereas the bedroom carpet and whole bungalow (incl en suite) is a plain greyish colour. I was thinking of cutting and removing a small piece from around the back of the en suite toilet and taking it to carpet shops and trying to match it, or at least a close match. I'm a disabled male and live alone so while I like a presentable home, I'm not too fussed if the decor and furnishing aren't A1 appearance or condition. (I always by secondhand furniture anyway).

FlyingDuster · 03/02/2023 14:55

EDIT: Just in case I didn't make myself clear, I want to find a piece of plain carpet a close colour match to replace the patterned carpet under the wardrobes.

I like them! Fitted wardrobes are expensive and these could be easily upcycled.

Don’t send them to the tip.

restisall · 03/02/2023 18:34

they look like good, solid wardrobes! You might as well try and see if you get any takers

Littlemountainhum · 03/02/2023 18:44

Tbh I would keep them! Have them painted for a more modern look - maybe white to lighten the room or a deep blue/charcoal for a moodier look. Presumably you need somewhere to keep clothes/shoes, even books/winter coats/spare duvet/blanket etc. If you get rid of them will you need to buy an alternative wardrobe/drawers for your clothes? You might as well pay a painter/decorator to paint them as pay to have someone remove them and get a new carpet. Agree with other posters about selling them being unlikely, but no harm trying.

GreenBiscuitr · 03/02/2023 18:58

It's a shame as they look in decent condition but you might get lucky and find someone with diy skills who could take them & reuse.

Palaver1 · 04/02/2023 06:48

I hope you get someone who will make good use of them paint change handles it will look good fitted wardrobes cost so much was quoted just a bit less than 5000 recently.
All the best in your new place

picklemewalnuts · 04/02/2023 07:25

Could you rotate the bed, flyingduster? Would that give you enough space to get round?

Re the carpet, I'm not convinced it would be possible to fit a slim section there. Talk to a carpet fitter, see what they say.

Theunamedcat · 04/02/2023 07:34

In my area giving things away for free is like throwing blood in the water in an area full of sharks you will absolutely get takers

Might be cheaper to just recarpet rather than try to match and possibly get a line you could snag up on

FlyingDuster · 04/02/2023 17:04

Hi thank you for all the replies, I do appreciate them. It's really good to get other peoples point of view. Living alone I don't really have anyone to ask for their opinion.
They are lovely wardrobes. The elderly couple who owned the bungalow from new (2001), really looked after it. And the fixtures and fittings they bought were always good quality.
I don't actually dislike the wardrobes, I'm nearly 60 and quite like the natural pine look. The woodwork (architrave and skirting boards) throughout the bungalow is stained pine with white doors and brass handles. (I'm probably old fashioned in my tastes 😊)
But the extra floorspace would make it easier for me getting round the end of the bed.
I might try what one person suggested, i.e. changing the orientation of the bed.
The wardrobe storage is handy, but being disabled male with not many clothes it's far too much for needs.

Also I take on board what people have said about the carpet.

I won't do anything for now, I will think on all you guys have said. Being male, it's so good getting a female point of view. Women have a much eye for home decor and furnishing than men.

Thanks guys! (thumbs up emoji)

I like them much more than boring modern painted ones. I'd keep them if they were mine, if I could make the space work. We have just removed some (far older and very ugly) fitted wardrobes. It can make a right mess, and isn't a quick job- at least, ours wasn't. In our case, they were so 'fitted' we had to rip them out, rather than just take them out. I'm spending today fitting cornicing, as there was none behind them. There was also no plaster, just plasterboard, so it cost us a plasterer's bill as well. Next is fitting skirtings, as there were no skirtings behind there either.🙄

makingarunforit · 04/02/2023 21:59

Someone will have them. They would look great painted with new knobs.

You could stick them on eBay with a really low starting price or put them on Freecycle.

@Littlemountainhum Did you actually read the OP's posts?

he's disabled and uses a wheelchair or Walker and wants some space around his bed. I'm sure he knows how much storage he needs.

@FlyingDuster

A good carpet fitter would be able to patch that, however, I'd look at getting them
to lift the carpet & move it around so it's not joined there, but under the head end of the bed. Unless you decide to move the bed of course. Finding a grey carpet that matches well enough shouldn't be difficult.

I think whether the wardrobe would sell or not depends on where you live. I'd have bought them off you when I was upcycling furniture.

BrieAndChilli · 04/02/2023 22:20

Do you need access to both sides of the bed?
if you don’t need all the storage could you put the head of the bed up against the wardrobe on the window side of the room - keep that bit empty or put stuff you only need once a year inside.
obviously if you need access to both sides of the bed that idea might not work.

determinedtomakethiswork · 04/02/2023 22:25

The problem is that the buyercould damage the walls and the floor by removing them. Also, if you read the other thread on here that was really shocking about someone refusing to pay, I think in your position I would rather pay for someone like a handyman to remove them.

minipie · 05/02/2023 00:38

Would it be possible to contact the previous owners and find out what carpet they used? Or even asking in local carpet shops if they fitted carpet at your address… you might get lucky and find the same carpet that way.

I agree that a perfect match is less important if your bed is going there.

Also remember there is the option of removing one side of the wardrobe and maybe the middle section but keeping the other side. This may be enough storage for you but also give you the space you need.

TheAustralian · 05/02/2023 01:55

Your wardrobes are lovey.

Don't give them away free.

With a coat of white paint and the curtains swapped for some lace or white fabric, change the handles for some brass ones 😘

The OP needs the space to manoeuvre his wheelchair. This thread is not about refurbishing the wardrobes.

Yes I know. I was giving suggestions on what could be done with the wardrobes by the proposed new owners of the wardrobes.
he could put some suggestions on his ad, every little bit of advice helps

@WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody errr… yes I read his posts. Disabled doesn’t mean not able to get help or consider other ways of using things, and it wasn’t the only thing mentioned in his brief. One of the restrictions in his brief was money - removing the wardrobes and patching up the mess left behind could work out more expensive than painting. Everyone needs at least some storage for clothes/bedding and if he gets rid of these wardrobes he may well have to buy himself another smaller wardrobe/drawers. All expense. I’m sure the OP is well capable of considering which of his criteria is most important to him and sifting ideas accordingly.

But thanks for implying I can’t read and think - you’ve enriched my life and the OP’s solutions no end. 👏
