Putting up a fireplace beam with mortar resin

long shot, but has anyone done this? We’ve got a fireplace with no mantle, so I ordered an oak beam instead of a full mantle piece. When I came to attach it, I realised the chimney breast wall is plaster board secured to masonry.

The company that sold the beam sent me new fixing instructions - drill 7.5cm deep holes, fill with mortar resin and insert a metal rod. Now this seems like a very permanent solution. Granted I like the beam and won’t be rushing to take it down, but someone in future might be cursing me for glueing three 15cm metal rods into the chimney breast? Am I overthinking it? I’m very new to diy!

In my experience you should always fit in accordance with instructions. You can hardly complain if you cut corners and the fixings fail. Whereas fitting it as instructed means you can go back to the supplier if you get a problem. I wouldn't worry about someone having to remove them in the future, it is a proper job now that you want.

I wouldn't worry, do as the company suggest. The rods could be cut be off with an angle grinder in the future if necessary.

Thanks! That’s reassuring. Just need to pop out to B&Q for an 18mm drill bit…
