This was in my garden...

I'm trying to figure out where it has come from and what it is. A few months ago I found a similar thing in my front drive (just assumed it had been kicked in or something). Now this has appeared in my back garden today. I'm worried it has fallen off the roof, but I can't see any gaps and the tiles are a different colour. Any ideas anyone?

If it doesn't match your house first thought is a naughty child that lives near you? Sort of thing my son would have done.

letsgetamoveon · 31/01/2023 18:56

Could it be cement from the ridge tiles? Have you had any ridge tiles that have moved with the wind?

mrsbyers · 31/01/2023 18:56

Looks like ridge tile fixing

EveryoneLovesSausageAndChips · 31/01/2023 18:59

I think it’s cement from the roof verges. It’s pretty windy today.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/01/2023 19:11

I agree, it’s from the ridge tiles. We used to get it a lot in our old place, if you look up at the roof with binoculars you will see where the chunks are missing

Thank you for the replies. That definitely sounds like it could be it. What do I need to do about it?? I don't have spare funds at the moment to get someone round. Worried it could be dangerous if it was to fall on someone.

Definitely a cement from the roof. It looks like it's lost it's adhesion & needs to be replaced. There's no way of stopping more of it falling off other than to get the ridge tiles re-cemented.

GreenBiscuitr · 31/01/2023 20:14

Stand away from your house in good light and take a photo of the roof that you can stretch to see if you can identify gaps along the ridges. Sometimes it's really obvious.

Screwedupworld · 31/01/2023 22:14

Looks like cerement from ridge tiles, we had an entire row fall last year in a storm and my garden was covered in little bits of cerement like this.

Salome61 · 31/01/2023 22:29

I get this too - plus down the side passage where the crows peck at the cement on my neighbour's chimney.

Sortingthehouse · 31/01/2023 23:02

Thank you everyone. Those of you who say you have/had this, did you get it repaired?

I had this, and yes you’ll need to get it repaired.
It’s not too expensive, and it’s one of the things keeping water out of your house so I wouldn’t leave it too long.

SkankingWombat · 31/01/2023 23:18

My money is on the roof verges too. Did you find it under the gable end? The second most likely offenders are the ridge tiles, but the shape of the cement isn't quite right for that.

We needed ours re-done a few years ago. We got a roofer to do it as we needed a few different bits done at the same time, but a bricky would be fine too (although if it is the ridge tiles, stick with a roofer).

How much roughly did you pay for the repair?

I have the same thing am waiting for the roofer to fix it, the cost is £340 .Its quite difficult to get this done at this time of year as it cant be done if its wet or to cold.

enjoyitnow · 01/02/2023 09:50

I got the same things, it is from the edge of the roof,
It can hurt people easily.

PragmaticWench · 01/02/2023 10:10

If you need scaffolding then that increases the cost. Will definitely need sorting else it will rain inside your house (bitter experience of buying a house where the verges hadn't been maintained).

Sortingthehouse · 01/02/2023 11:58

Thank you all.

Instead of having it repaired/repointed you can have verge cappings put on. They are UPVc and go over the edge of the verge. Very low maintenance and you wont need to worry about it happening again.
