Mouldy flaking bathroom ceiling

The ceiling in our ensuite has quite a bad problem with flaking paint and black mold around the edges, which I should have tackled before it got this bad - anyway, this morning I finally got around to scraping off all of the flaky paint and treating the non-flaky but moldy patches by cleaning with bleach. In total I'd say I've removed about a quarter of all the paint on the ceiling. The question is, what's the best next step? Do I really need to strip off all the paint, or will I be able to get away with sanding the edges of the remaining paint? I'm planning to seal the bare plaster patches with a mix of mold resistant paint and PVA glue, then paint the whole lot again with mold-resistant paint. Any tips? Can anyone recommend a good paint that will help prevent the problem recurring?

Bleach can actually make mould worse in the long run. Something to do with there being a large water content to bleach and it sending the moulds roots deeper into the porous surface.

To prevent it coming back after you’ve used the mould paint you need to make sure there is adequate ventilation via extractor fan, the window regularly being open or removing the damp air with a dehumidifier.

I'd sand, then coat with zinsser peel stop, then coat whole ceiling with zinsser perma white mould resistant paint. I don't work for zinsser, but I do rate their products!

Then ventilate, ventilate, ventilate!

Thank you both. We have an extractor fan and open the window every morning. ..we do both shower every day, but surely that should be enough....

We had this issue with our en-suite too. It's a really bad design with an odd shape and the steam just sits on one part of the ceiling and caused a lot of mould issues.

We used zinsser as mentioned above but then we ended up cladding (pvc) the ceiling so we don't have to deal with the same issue again.

We also put in a much larger/more powerful fan vented through the roof rather than the wall.

Is your extractor strong enough? Try putting a piece of tissue on it and see how well it sucks. Is it running for long enough after your shower? Should be at least 10 mins. Also, if you don't already, squeegying the walls and screen to remove more of the water may help too.

I’m a DIY single mum. My best advice buy decent tools and you tube.

our tumble dryer broke - knew it was the belt. £5.99 for a new belt and an entire Saturday morning and 42 screw later - working tumble dryer
our hedge trimmer over heated £3.70 for a new flex connector and an hour to cut, strip and wire the thing and a new fuse 20p and all good to go
drill stopped working yesterday - first point of call - check the plug - live wire out so rewired it and all good.

You can save a fortune. I have huge sorting boxes - nails, bolts, screws - all in different holes - order them it makes life easier. And label tools and never lend anything!!
