To reroof? Pictures attached

We moved into a lovely 1926 edwardian property in Sept, building survey commented a few minor repairs to roof but otherwise in good condition. Developed a leak (minor) a couple of weeks ago and have had to have scaffolding to assess the damage, there are a couple of slipped tiles. Anyway the roofer suggested I start to consider in the short to medium term having a complete reroof. I suppose it's not a complete shock due to the age of the house but I was lead to believe slate lasts forever. Also we have no membrane which is not completely unusual for the age of the house but are well insulated. Anyway any experts out there? What do you think?

I should add the darker areas are where the chimney stacks were removed by the previous owner so I'm assuming a newer slate

I would not even contemplate a reroof at this point. There are no major issues with the roof as is.

Roofers are bound to say you’ll need a new one. We had three tell us that a couple of years ago. We haven’t changed it and it is still watertight, which I guess is the point of the roof. No roof lining for us either, which makes the lift area very dusty. I would just keep an eye on it!

Thank you for your replies, iv just been looking at some older post discussing roofs. Seems like slate can last alot longer than the age ours is now

The roofer likely saw all the slate and got ££ in his eyes thinking about selling you concrete tiles for an reroof and then selling your slate on.

Even if you need to redo the timbers holding roof, you should still reuse the slate. You should never have to reroof.

How long are you planning on staying here?

Hopefully forever, we are in our late 30s

It looks absolutely fine to me. Just a bit weathered.

I have a similar roof of a similar age. When I moved in I factored in the need for a new roof. 30 years later it's the same roof apart from the odd repair every couple of years. Usually slipped or broken tiles.

That's reassuring, thank you!
