Conservatory Insulation

Looking at options for our conservatory to make it usable all year round & the easiest option seems to be insulation panels on the ceiling ( we were previously considering a proper roof)
Has anyone had these & do they actually work?
We use the conservatory for about 3 months a year, but would love to have it as a permanent space.

No advice sorry, but following with interest as I have the same situation. It's either an ice box or a sweat box.

We have a decent heater in the conservatory, so im hopeful with the insulation it will make a big difference, but don't want to waste money if not & will rethink the plan!

Ours is the same, there are only small windows in the Spring & Autumn when it can actually be used, which is a shame. Am wondering whether it shoud just be converted to an extension

Bump ! Did you go ahead with this and how is it ? We are looking at getting these done. Not sure if investing in under floor heating worth it as well

BlueMongoose · 06/10/2023 14:59

Would it be possible to change the roof glass? You can get thermal glass which both stops a lot of the sun's heat getting in and is insulating in the winter, but TBH it is expensive. I can't compare it with plain glass because in both ours we've had the thermal stuff from the start, but the stats suggest it works, and it does seem to.

We replaced all the glass with thermal glass and underfloor heating. However when temperatures drop rapidly overnight the underfloor heating is not enough as it works too slowly. We have therefore installed a 2m tall 10 section radiator which seems to have done the trick!

I had my old plastic lean to conservatory roof replace in April this year. We went for a EPDM rubber roof with insulation. It made a huge difference in the summer months, We have a large radiator in there so hoping it will also be much warmer in the winter also. It was so much cheaper than other options we were given and we are very happy with it so far.

We had the 35 year old leaking plastic roof on our south facing conservatory replaced with a proper (lightweight) tiled roof with two small velux type windows and it made a massive difference this summer. We actually used it as a room rather than a passageway to outside.
Can't comment on winter use as ill health has prevented DH from doing the insulation and ceiling but expect once it's finished off it will be usable if we need it.
I imagine the insulated panels will work just as well but as our roof was leaking we had to replace it.

Hi, would you mind letting me know how you have found your new rubber roof to be during the winter? We are looking to get this done next month. Thanks!

Astraj · 10/02/2025 13:07

It has made a huge difference, cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
We can use the conservatory all year round now.
We do have a radiator in our conservatory and I would say during winter evenings it's colder than the rest of the house but not like it was before we had the roof replaced, we sit in there in the evening with a blanket and it's lovely.

We had the windows and roof replaced ( conservatory over 20 years old). Tiled roof, good insulation and skylight window. Made huge difference. We can use it all year round. Not a cheap option but I was ready to take the conservatory down. We have removed the patio doors into the kitchen and it's fine. Do need additional heater on during this cold weather but 10 months of year it's warm enough with no additional heating. We love it.

Thanks for responding! We’ve been given two separate quotes to either just replace the roof or roof and windows. Obviously it’s considerably more to replace the windows as well and so we would need to wait a little longer to save up for this, however the builder advised that we could go ahead and replace the roof now and replace the windows at a later date. My concern is how he would go about this without disrupting the new roof? Also the windows we have now are double glazed and maybe just require a new seal. Did anyone just replace the roof and found that this made a big difference to the insulation or has everyone replaced both windows and roof?
