Making a 1930s semi warm/ cool

Have a 1930s semi on a hill that you freeze or boil in so looking to work with the property to make it the best it can be. As a guide with curtains open a chair halfway in room was hot to the touch and that's now! Everywhere else... Baltic even with the heating on! The height difference means the roof, windows all get direct hits iyswim. I have thermal blackout liners on lined curtains which helps with the glass and some cling plastic on some of the windows too to reflect out some of thesolar gain.

Been on the list for ages as our hands have been tied but now I can finally look at upgrading property so that it works better and looking for advice thoughts experience.

Currently in the works we are looking to have loft insulation topped up (though it isn't overly stingy in the bits we can see, the numerous rolls up there unopened suggests nothing under screwed down boards), new hatch and properly boarded out for the wide middle section. We are desperate for storage here so hoping for two birds, one stone idea. I'm also considering the foil stuff on the roof but I can do that myself with a staple gun as and when starting with the front side.

We have shingles/ felt type tiles on the bit between two bay windows that I assume has bugger all in it apart from a few battens, air and the back of lath/plaster. Tiles have had it so looking to get it taken out, insulate with the polystyrene insulation etc. and clad in uPVC (most of our street are uPVC or render) is it the most attractive no... but neither are decaying felt shingles so I'm not fussed. uPVC seems the easiest/low maintenance

Hoping it's not an exercise in futility 😩 I'm fed up of being so cold or hot. We've been saving but budget isn't massive and it needs to get as much bang for the buck as possible.

Anyone else had loft work done or bay windows insulated.recently? Does it help?
