Has anyone got electric blinds?

I have a 3 sided bay window, with a couch in front of it (which I can’t get behind easily)

It currently has vertical blinds which are horrible, but which have the advantage of having the pull cord at one end of the bay (so easily reachable)

I’m looking at replacing the blinds with roller blinds, but would need to clamber over the couch to open/close two our or of three of them.

I’ve just seen electric blinds that can open/close with an app or remote which look like a good solution.

Has anyone got these? Where did you get them from? Would you recommend them?

Hi, we have them on two straight windows, absolutely love them ! Been in a few months and no issues as yet.

Vikingmama79 · 26/01/2023 07:43

sorry forgot to say ours are from blinds2go.

NewUserName134 · 26/01/2023 07:46

That’s great! We’re they particularly expensive compared with non elec (if you checked)?

Had them installed for my late mother when she was not so mobile (battery powered ones).
They are very good but if there is a downside it is that if you forget to charge them they could get stuck in an open / closed position. That said, they should last a few months between charges.
Have seen it where the person left the charging lead permanently connected, looked awful.

Hey, I can’t really remember re price but not massively so I don’t recall.

Yes! We have them in our whole upstairs, they are fantastic. We got ours from John Lewis, they will come out for a free site visit beforehand. Lots of colour choice/ blackout option etc. We love them and wouldn't be without them. Added bonus is security when you are away.
They are a lot more expensive than normal blinds though.

A word of warning is that when/if the motors go repairing them can be a lot trickier than you’d think. I know a few people who ended up going back to manual blinds

We got some electric roller blinds for a very tall and wide set of windows a couple of years ago made up by John Lewis. Total nightmare from start to finish.

Measured wrong from the outset (so wrong the fitter didn’t even try and put them in). When the remade ones were fitted, the gap between the top of the blinds and the window recess was massive. This was basically a design issue with the bracket and couldn’t be put right. In the end we just rejected them and got a refund, but the whole sorry process took months from start to end.

Other types might be different, but it put me right off trying it again and in the end we replaced with curtains.

Smart electric blinds let you set a schedule.
Our kitchen window faces the road so we have a Smart blind that automatically shuts at sunset and opens at 9am. So convenient

We have some from IKEA in our bay window in the living room. Love them. You can connect them to Alexa so you don't even need a remote control!

I have similar to you - a box bay with deep windows and another deep window - manual cords would take
an age and would be left to me. I went for honeycomb style thermal ones as they compress so much that they don’t block the view. That made them so much more expensive than motorised roller blind but we love them- very good at sound and heat insulation & look contemporary in keeping with house. Got them from a small blind company- I think it’s all from same supplier. Haven’t had to recharge batteries yet - once a year or so is enough for the light thermal blinds.

NewUserName134 · 27/01/2023 07:30

This is encouraging. My next question was going to be about power supply so interesting that they’re battery operated!

@Foofedifiknow (great name!) - is there any chance you could link to something similar to what you have please? Sounds exactly what I’m looking for (especially the thermal bit)

what about curtains that are on a track so the pull cord is at the ends?
