Can you share your opinion on this roof repair?

I had to get my small bay window roof repaired, and the roofer recommended felt, but I'm not sure about how it's all pieced together.

Is this normal? What's the risk of the overlapping pieces allowing water in over time? And is it ok there is no metal flashing between wall and roof? Thanks.

Not an expert but it looks pretty shoddy and piecemeal in my view. Roofing felt is more suitable for sheds.

Is the job finished? There is no lead flashing fitted which is not right.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/01/2023 23:29

He/she has used up oddments. That will leak eventually. As PP said, where’s the flashing?

C4tastrophe · 26/01/2023 06:07

I would not be concerned about the pieces. The blowtorch literally melts them together so they are as strong as a single piece.
However I’m a bit more surprised there is no lead flashing. I presume this is not an exposed side of the house?
It looks like it’s a silicon bead, which won’t last as long as lead, but may last as long as the roof.
What did you agree on the flashing? Was there a detailed contract?

I'd be worried about the flashing too. When we moved into our house the flashing on our enclosed porch needed to be repaired. When DH's uncle came to do it he pulled off some of the plaster inside the porch on the house side and it was pouring with water. There was no lasting damage but it made me realise how important it was!

There is flashing on it, it’s just been flashed with a strip of felt instead of lead.

wineymummy · 26/01/2023 09:36

No that's not a felt flashing, it's a felt upstand. The lead should be dressed over that. Really the lead ought to be 150mm above the roof. It looks like there is a chase in the old brickwork (mortar joint) - presumably there was a lead flashing there previously - it's prbably not 150mm but not too far off and for a small roof it should be adequate. Tell your roofer you need a lead flashing installed and the mortar joint pointed up.
On the felt - yes it looks a bit piecemeal but if the joints are all properly sealed with bitumen it should be OK. It looks a mess though, can you see it from the ground / regularly from the window? I wouldn't want to be looking at that regularly.

wineymummy · 26/01/2023 09:41

Correction and apologies @Diyextension the second photo does show a felt flashing - the first doesn't. Still though, felt isn't strong enough and it should be lead which lasts over 100 years. That felt flashing will deteriorate.

Diyextension · 26/01/2023 16:31

Did you ask for lead ? Did he say he was using lead and didn’t ? Or did you just assume he was using lead ? That flashing should last as long as the roof covering seeing as it’s made of the same material.

It's a small roof with no overlooking window, we will never see the top. The roofer has come round to answer my questions, and they have a 3 year guarantee on the work. Based on what's been said here, and what I've learned from roofing via Google, the flashing made of felt is normal and justified in this instance.

Thanks for the insights, it's helped a lot.
