Loft insulation cost

I've been quoted £2.5k for this. Removal of old insulation (it is old and filthy), removal of existing boarding, insulation 270mm and boarding which is raised. When I look at price calculator online it is much less than this. It's for a 1930s semi detached. Anyone else recently done this and what did you pay?

You don’t need to remove old insulation, the dirt won’t affect it , just top it up with more on top. 2 and half grand sounds steep to me. Unless your semi detached has ten bedrooms ?

ARoughRide · 23/01/2023 17:13

Does the online calculator include removing boarding and putting new boarding down?
Is the insulation material like for like in the calculations?

I’m interested in prices as ours needs doing, I’d always assume actual prices worked out by someone who’s come to look at the job would be higher than an online guesstimate though. It always seems to be the way.

Diyextension · 23/01/2023 18:20

Surly they won’t need to renew the boarding ? If there is nothing wrong with it then they can reuse it , it just needs to be on the legs to make it higher for the extra insulation. The legs are not expensive.

How many sqm is your loft area ?

areyouhavingagiraffe · 23/01/2023 19:09

It's 50sqm. And no the online calcs don't take into account the removal of boarding / new boarding.
I have restricted mobility at the moment so unable to do the insulation myself

A quick google and it looks like 50sqm of loft insulation at 270 mm depth is about £300-350, maybe cheaper if they are trade. Looks to me they are having your pants down 🙁

HellyPen · 23/01/2023 21:00

What kind of insulation? Rock wool is cheap but celotex is expensive, we were quoted £2k for celotex.

areyouhavingagiraffe · 23/01/2023 21:05

I've also seen this on Google. But I believe that doesn't include removal (and yes I do want to remove as I had a leaking boiler up there), and new boarding. And does the Google cost include labour?

OP posts:
ARoughRide · 23/01/2023 21:22

The Google price will just be the cost of the actual insulation.

That's what I thought. I just found another local firm which lists their package prices online, it's £2,100 for 100mm insulation over the same area as mine, plus 20sqm boarding. I am also getting a few other quotes. The guy who quoted me the £2.5k has some excellent feedback locally and also on checkatrade. I don't think he is "having my pants down" so to speak

Can’t you buy a roll and do it yourself?

Diyextension · 23/01/2023 22:07

When I said Google, I was actually looking on wickes🙂.

no it didn’t involve labour that’s for the price of the insulation.

the pir board insulation ( celotex ) is a lot more and also not really needed to just insulate ceilings ( cold roof ). And is a lot more work to fit.

it’s impossible to say how long it will take due to a number of factors access/ loft height/ tanks in the way/ stuff in the loft , but if your happy with the quotes you are getting then that’s all that matters

Even if it took one person all week to complete, they would be earning some good money 💰

I don't feel confident going up a loft ladder with crutches. So no.

A trade will have to pay for disposal of old insulation at the tip - we've been redoing ours for months and so far have take 25 black sacks full of old insulation (and mice nests). We've gone through boxes and boxes of loft legs. .

Saz12 · 23/01/2023 22:43

It might be cheaper if you dispose of old insulation yourself - can you store it in a shed and get rid via your landfill bin over several weeks? I’m assuming you’re not able to drive to tip on crutches...

Diyextension · 23/01/2023 22:58

Just bag it all up and advertise on Facebook or gumtree , lots of people have use for old insulation ( it will still insulate ). And they will come and collect it for free. All our old insulation that fell out the loft when we pulled ceilings down , went back in the floor.

Please don’t do this!

Most insulation materials cannot be disposed of in regular waste or recycling, you'll instead need to find your local household waste recycling centre and take it there. In some cases, you may have to engage the services of a professional waste remover.

Why you are thinking about spending a lot of money when you have alot of options to get it done for free.. The gov are providing free eco grants for doing isulation and heatings..But you have to be eligible for that..I'm not sure if you are eligible or not..Read this blog which describes who is eligible for insulation grants...You may get all the information from that...If not speak witha any grant providers nearby you..
