What is the least likely bathroom to date?

We need to replace the bathroom in this house. I'd assume it's the original from the 1990s.
We are very unlikely to replace it again in the 15 years we are likely to stay here.
What would you put in a new-ish build bathroom that won't scream "installed mid 2020s"?

Will almost certainly keep the same floorplan of bathroom - adding a shower over the bath, loo and sink. Would love some storage.

I am anti grey, but that's pretty much the only thing on line!

And would you put in an electric or mixer shower?

Subway tiles are definitely not timeless.

They've been used since the early days of indoor plumbing. They were widely used in the 1920s and 1930s (see e.g. www.walesonline.co.uk/lifestyle/welsh-homes/1930s-detached-house-sale-first-17313781). They are pretty timeless.

It doesn't really matter. In 15 years it will still be a 15 year old bathroom and will be showing its age. People viewing then will likely rip it out.

Just buy what you love. You're going to put up with it for 15 years.

Subway tiles were dated about 3 years ago!

Subway tiles have been around since the subway was built, and they have only just dated in the last 3 years ? 🤣

What’s it like being as funny as you?🙄

Vikingmama79 · 23/01/2023 17:44

If you were planning on moving in 2-3 years I could see the sense in a classic/ safe bathroom but given you are estimating 15 years at least then go for what you love and brings you joy. Life is far too short to be worrying about a future, fictional buyer might like or dislike. Granted I’m somewhat biased as just replaced ours with green and marble tiles and brass taps, absolutely love it. Couldn’t care less if it ‘dates’.

Honeyroar · 23/01/2023 18:02

I think we’re I’d panelling in a bathroom suits an old house, but not so much a newbuild.

Definitely avoid modern shaped toilets and baths (square toilets or baths with the square shower bit at one end).

My bathroom is nearly 20 years old and I don’t think it looks dated. It’s just simple white Bath, sink and loo with a plain shower screen and large sandy/earthy looking tiles. The bloke that did the tiling really wanted us to have a little mosaic line of tiles around the room. I’m so glad we didn’t as I think that would have aged it more.

oh and @ouch321, I’ve just inherited my father’s property. I can find you a blue suite. And peach. And pink…. Just say the word! He was insistent that people would get bored of white suites.

I’m not the one making the jokes 😆

I don’t understand the love for white subway tiles, they just scream public toilet to me. Horrible look in bathrooms and kitchens.

Nat6999 · 23/01/2023 18:49

My bathroom in the house I owned was fitted in 2007, it's just been on Rightmove & it looks modern & no way dated. I had a white P shaped bath with shower over, chrome taps & fittings, white pedestal basin as there wasn't room for a vanity unit, white low flush toilet. The tiles are large cream stone effect, full wall around Bath, 1.5 Square behind basin & toilet, the rest of the walls are paintable, chrome towel radiator & cream stone effect cushion floor, chrome toilet roll holder, hand towel ring, chrome & glass shelf over basin & chrome mirror with shaving mirror attached.

Heronwatcher · 23/01/2023 19:03

White bath, loo etc. Pale tiles and silver or chrome taps etc. Fine to use Victorian type tiles but I might avoid the mid-matching effect which is popular at the moment. I’d avoid Crittal type shower screens, waterfall taps, square taps or black taps. I’d also avoid too many gadgets which could break. Definitely a mixer shower if you’ve got decent water pressure or a decent boiler.

Avoid black taps , nice white suite and subway tiles are pretty timeless

Hate subway tiles, they look like public toilets. Tbh, go for what you like because if you sell after 15 years the buyer will want a new bathroom no doubt.

CatOnTheChair · 23/01/2023 19:23

Thank you for all the thoughts.
Most of the things you are suggesting are best avoided, I wouldn't have put in anyway (and I'm not a massive fan of subway tiles either).

Chateau by avoiding all in one, do you mean get a pedestal sink rather than with the cupboard underneath?
Ditto for the loos with a hidden cistern and a sort of shelf above? I was wondering about a run along the wall to get a shelf and a cupboard.
this sort of thing with different tiles is best avoided?

Exactly…someone somewhere decided about 10ish years ago to bring them into homes when they should have stayed where they were

OK. Mixed reviews on Subway tiles!
What about wood? Is that going to last as a style in bathroms?

Subway tiles are fine and haven’t gone out of date yet despite what I’ve been reading on mumsnet for the last 12 years!!

Agree with those saying if you are planning at least 15 years from it go for something you like.

cravingtoblerone · 23/01/2023 19:38

We went with white throughout, with a row of black metro tiles as an accent around the middle of the wall and black tiles on floor. Classic colours, won't date. Bathroom is ten years old and still looks fresh.

xeraco · 23/01/2023 20:59

Subway tiles are very dated now. Especially with dark grout. Go for stone/ marble effect instead. A classic look that won't date.
