Horrible gap around shower - is this normal?

We have noticed that there is what seems to me to be a weird gap around the shower...

It's a small gap between the glass of the shower enclosure and the tray...

It's large enough that all sorts of grossness dog hair gets trapped in it but too small to fit very much in there to clean it.

I usually end up using cotton wool bud things meant for ears but it's really still not the easiest thing to clean and the grossness creeps me out (I have genuine not taking the piss contamination OCD specifically around bathrooms hence why I'm being such a baby about it).

Is it normal to have this gap?

I've attached a picture ignore the glass, it's not dirt but cleaning product sprayed all over the inside as supposed to be cleaning right now.

I don't remember one on any other showers but we haven't had a shower in our own home before (as in, we've had them over the bath but not stand-alone).

If it's not normal, are the gaps filled with something?

Did the installer use the wrong size tray?

Any clues appreciated as not finding it easy to Google the answer

there shouldn’t be a gap, no.

Is the black bit plastic? Sorry, hard to see from the photo. If it's a plastic seal, pull it off and bleach it.

Clean it. Then clean it with alcohol. Then add silicon sealant (sometimes called caulk). You can buy it in any hardware store.

Needs sealant run around it

Caulk is different to sealant , caulk is for filling cracks then painting over and not waterproof so deffo not advised in a wet environment

Is it? I thought it was just regional/country terminology difference. As long as it’s designed for bathrooms and is waterproof then it’ll be fine OP.

Great, thanks. Will get that done this weekend!

I figured something like that had been missed Hmm

My shower is like this - I’m not sure it can be sealed? That would be one large splodge of sealant. I clean mine by wedging a thin cloth down, but it isn’t ideal.

Transparent silicon sealant.

I had to do the same.

I double checked watching a YouTube video - different kind of shower / base but definitely confirms that the outside should be sealed (and yes it will take a decent amount of sealant).

You shouldn't seal the inside though...

That’s interesting, I’ll have a proper watch later - thanks!
