Please help! What is this part called on old windows? I need mine totally replaced but can't find someone with the right expertise until I have the first clue what I'm asking for.

Lintel?

Either a lintel or a decorative stone head I think?

SheWoreYellow · 20/01/2023 09:34

If it’s made of stone then I guess you need a stone mason.

northernlola · 20/01/2023 09:35

Thanks. Sorry should have specified, the one on my house is made of wood.

Had a Google n looks like it's an external dentil cornice

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/01/2023 09:58

If the corbels are wood have a look at this company, richardburbidge.com/shop/mouldings

They have all sorts of mouldings and it might be possible to create something similar. You would still need a good, sympathetic carpenter to construct it.

Thanks so much everyone

It's just a plaster cornice, but I can't see clearly what It's purpose is. It looks like it covers up the timber structure that holds up your bay window roof and possibly a parapet gutter. So you might need a roofer for lead flashing and a lime plasterer/general builder/carpenter for the timber repairs behind the cornice and then replastering.

NellyBarney · 20/01/2023 15:46

What is wrong with it? Why does it need to be replaced? Is it leaking?

NellyBarney · 20/01/2023 15:51

I mean the cornice is just decorative and usually can be taken off to carry out any structural repairs behind it. If it is wood, a joiner will be able to repair any rotten bits (cutting bits out and splicing new bits in), if it is plaster, a plasterer can refix it.

northernlola · 20/01/2023 18:04

Yes it's rotten wood that's the issue. Thank you.

If it is just rotten wood on the decorative cornice bit, then what you need to look for is a Window Joiner. But if it is severely rotten (doesn'tlook bad in the photo though), there might have been some water leaks (damaged/blocked guttering or faulty flashing) causing it, so you might have a builder/roofer check for any water ingress behind/onto the cornice.

@NellyBarney thanks so much for your help. Sorry, I realise I wasn't clear, that's not actually my house. That's just a picture from Google of something similar, I wasn't at home when I posted. Mine isn't in very good condition.

Know a lot more about what I'm asking for now though, thanks all.
