What do you think my bills will be?

I am moving into a rental and wondering roughly what my energy bills might be?

(I am embarrassed to say that I don’t have a clue what they might be…)

It is a 3 bedroom detached new build.

If you have a similar house, what are your heating and electricity bills coming to?

Similar size and type of house, on standard variable we’d pay £164 a month it is estimating. (We are currently on a lower priced fix but that is no longer available for new customers).

Is £164 for your gas and electricity? 🙏
This seems cheap? I have heard people talking about £500 a month bills recently.

It is yeah! We are currently paying £122 a month on a fixed rate

Bills can be massively variable.

Here are some things that can affect them a lot :

How much you use the heating. If you keep your house at 15C rather than 20C it will be a lot cheaper. Also if you intend to wfh rather than be out during the day.

Type of house. If you are in a new build it will be cheaper because they are insulated better.

Type of heating. Conventional electric is very expensive (3.5x that of gas if you are on a normal tariff). Gas and heat pump probably about the same if the heat pump is properly set up (it will be in a new build).

Ultimately I doubt whether you are going to stop your house move because of anything anyone says on here about heating bills. My guess is you will vary your energy use to be consistent with how much money you have.

What you can know for sure is that if you are in a new build, you are best placed to get the lowest bills possible.

Thank you Gaspanic.
Yes I will still be going ahead with the move.

I don’t wfh but will be there quite a lot of the time so will want it warm. (I am used to very warm houses)

As long as it stays under £300 per month I think I will be ok. It’s a little scary as I’ve not lived on my own before.

ok, i was about to ask how many people living there because multiplying up showers / baths / loads of laundry will make a fair difference. I've only got 2 beds and my estimated bill was just £200 last month but I need to submit a gas meter reading as I suspect it was nothing like that in reality (I have an electric smart meter so that portion will be accurate). If you've got bedrooms you're not using then keep the doors closed and radiators turned down.
