Windows painted - not happy

We've had our wooden windows painted (they are Georgian) and there is paint on the glass. Some places 1mm or 2mm, some places more. Is this normal? It looks messy to me. We paid a fair amount to get them painted and I thought it would look better than this.

Do I get the guys back or am I being fussy? I thought tidying up at the end would be part of what they are doing...

Have they over-painted? I was surprised by windows left the same way, but a glass scraper sorted it out beautifully. I don't know if they think it seals better when properly dry or want you to do it in case the seals get damaged or what it is, but this does seem to be how they do it.

Orangeba · 18/01/2023 16:44

Yes, they've over painted. It looks rubbish!

Just scrape it off.

goldennotyetoldie · 18/01/2023 16:49

Sounds rubbish. Get them back. Hopefully you haven't paid fully yet?

Orangeba · 18/01/2023 16:59

They are Georgian windows so there are tons of bits to scrape off. Also I paid a decent amount to get them painted and I genuinely thought they would look better than this.

Why did you pay if you aren't satisfied?

Beach1983 · 18/01/2023 17:19

Can you post a pic? I work in historic restoration and paint a LOT of old windows! We always paint onto the glass slightly, this is called a sight line, obviously it should be done neatly and uniformly and easy to look awful if done wrong - hard to know if it’s a bad job without seeing it!

That is really shoddy work.

Ciri · 18/01/2023 17:24

Id assume they were coming back to sort that once the paint is cured. Its completely the wrong time of year to paint externally. It will take a while to cure and then they can scrape it off the glass.

Ciri · 18/01/2023 17:25

If its internal that's just crap painting and Id be expecting them to come back and sort

Fedupofdiets · 18/01/2023 17:25

Fuck me I could have done them better than that. You are not being fussy but please tell me you havent paid for that already??!

Beach1983 · 18/01/2023 17:28

Oh wow! This is terrible and totally unacceptable, I would complain! Like I said it’s totally normal to overpaint slightly on old windows to create a seal between the glass and putty but the idea is to do it in a straight line! 😫

Lonelycrab · 18/01/2023 17:30

That is particularly bad. I’m not sure I’d want them back to sort the problem though, if they’ve made that much of a mess of it then I’m not sure I’d want them back to potentially make it worse. If you’re at all diy minded you could get a Stanley, score a nice line then use a blade scraper to get the excess off the glass, it’s often pretty straightforward.

Titoti · 18/01/2023 17:33

Oh my god it's awful. Did they mask at all?! Even my steady hand would have been better. Drunk.

Please say you haven't paid yet.

Irridescantshimmmer · 18/01/2023 17:34

You have 2 choices,

  1. Complain because the painter should have used masking tape to protect your windows but now it it looks like they have made a pigs ear of a job. You could also demand a discount.

  2. Get yourself some paintstripper, just use a small artists paint brush and tease the paint off the window that way with the paint stripper. The excess paint can be wiped away with a damp cloth.

There is a good branded paintstripper I have used with begins with 'N' which is very effective.

I have painted before but I am definatly not a pro😁

Hope this helps.

Lonelycrab · 18/01/2023 17:38

Get yourself some paintstripper

No, I really wouldn’t recommend that. Providing the glass is in good condition (ie not scratched) a blade scraper or Stanley blade on its side will lift paint perfectly off from the glass. I’ve cleaned up badly painted windows before like this no problem.

Fullsomefrenchie · 18/01/2023 17:41

That’s awful. I’d complain.

Foxywood · 18/01/2023 17:51

If it’s Georgian glass it might be wobbly (ie not as flat as modern stuff) so ask them to scrape but cautiously.

winterpastasalad · 18/01/2023 17:55

I was thinking that at 1mm over YABU but that picture is awful. I'm terrible at painting but even I could have done better!

slamwich · 18/01/2023 18:15

That's a mess. Definitely get them back
