Layout for home office?

I’m at a loss of how to layout my home office and would love some ideas.

the room is 4.39m x 3.53m with a big window looking out to the front garden (see “study” in the floor plan below). I have a desk which needs to be placed in the room which is 125cm long and 79cm deep, some bookcases to run along one wall (2 x 103cm length and 39 depth). I want to also have some chairs in the room or a sofa, a long mirror and an area for me to hang some exercise equipment (probably behind the door). What I keep going back and forth about is the best place to put the chairs.

it is being decorated soon and new curtains fitted etc and I want to try and work out layout before painting happens so I don’t start knocking brand new walls with furniture!!! Any thoughts would be so appreciated, including homey things I haven’t thought yet to make the space inviting and more enjoyable to be in.

Does the window get direct sun? Avoid direct sun behind a monitor.

It gets light but it’s north facing so not overwhelming sun.

The H&S guidance for the company I work for (Over 50,000 employees) recommends the monitor is sideways on to the window. Not sure why.
Obviously can't share internal docs, but here is some advice from a monitor manufacturer: www.viewsonic.com/library/business/best-computer-screen-positioning/

A North facing window is good for an office, you can stare out of it! I have experience of a south facing window and have to draw the curtain when it's sunny or I can't see the screen.

Bookshelves on the wall opposite the window (red lines).

Desk on the wall between bookshelves and windows (D). That way the daylight falls to your side so you avoid glare on the monitor.
And get a bigger desk - that one is tiny for the size of the room and the chair barely fits under. you will be much more comfortable with a bigger desk with no drawers under. I'm short and like a desk that is lower than standard height - it makes a big difference.

then a comfy chair in the corner opposite the door, oriented so you can sit & read and look out of the window. Or turn it towards the centre of the room if you have a pair of chairs & want to have a conversation.

Have a BIG rug on the floor as well to draw everything together. And make sure you have a nice desk lamp - anglepoise are always good.

Thank you! This sounds/looks great. I’ll try out my current desk in that position and see how it feels but agreed with you the desk needs to be upsized at some point!!

The art of feng shui suggests you should face the door, maybe put your desk in front of the window and sit behind it facing the door
