It’s £700 in rent, and it’s council tax band C

then there’s water and electricity bill on top of that..

how much all together should we expect to be paying per month?

I really hope we can afford it since we are currently living on one income

About a grand.

RJnomore1 · 09/01/2023 17:51

No idea… how big is it, how old is it, what is hand c tax in your area, what sort of heading, which supplier…

Turmerictolly · 09/01/2023 17:54

£700 rent
About £250 energy
About £130 council tax (depends on which one)
Contents insurance £25
Water rates £30

Energy bills might be lower depending on insulation etc.

HowCanIPayItForward · 09/01/2023 17:56

Council tax varies a lot by area - you can check on the local council website

Water - we pay £57 per month for 4 of us in a 4 bed house so presumably yours will be lower but I've no idea how it's worked out or if there are regional variations.

Electric - do you have gas as well, or os all heating, hot water, oven etc electric? Energy prices are through the roof and difficult to predict right now as I'm sure you know so allow plenty for this. Prior to last April our combined gas & electric had never been more than £100 - last month it was £350! And I think we're relatively light users (hardly ever put heating on etc).

Don't forget contents insurance (shouldn't be much at all - £20/30 per month?), internet, TV licence and any subscription services.

CT will depend on area, you can look up on the council website what c band charge is . Water maybe rated or metered and again costs vary by supplier.

Council tax varies from area to area so you'll need to look that up for where you live.
Electric will depend on your usage, tariff & type of heating (eg if you have night storage heaters you might want to look at tariffs with lower rates at night). Energy prices are very high at the moment so I'd budget a couple of hundred tbh.
If your water is metered, that will also depend on your usage. I think we paid around £35/month when we had a flat (2 adults).

good96 · 09/01/2023 21:29

Have you considered other costs? Contents insurance? TV Licence? Broadband?
It all adds up. As a rough estimate, you probably won’t get much change from £1200. That’s not including the other living costs you will have.

emmathedilemma · 10/01/2023 11:56

Council tax rates will be on your council website. Note that you pay them for 10months a year rather than 12.
Water will depend whether you're on a water meter or not. If not, then it will be based on the council tax band and should be on the water company website. If you're in Scotland then water is paid for with your council tax.
Electric will really depend on how big the flat is (a 1 bed new build will be much better insulated than a large flat in an old building with wooden windows and high ceilings) and how much you use. I'm guessing as you don't mention gas then it has electric heating?
Is there also a fee to a management company for communal lighting, buildings insurance, stair cleaning etc?

My son is renting a huge luxury 2 bed 2 bath apartment at the moment
double height ceilings balcony all white food and parking space in an expensive south west city
gated community allotments private grounds
i would live there if I could 😂
He is paying 900 a month so an absolute steal

he is buying a 3 bed 2 bath house
huge garden
massive triple driveway with gate
2 reception rooms and a conservatory
and a garage that runs the length of the house That is used as a gym/ utility room

his mortgage will be 1160
his present lodger is coming with him and he will be paying £550 inc all bills

Karmatime · 06/06/2023 20:20

We rent a 2 bed flat, council tax band B, total bills for council tax, electricity (no gas), water, insurance, broadband, tv licence and contents insurance just over £400 a month so £1100 if our rent was £700.

USaYwHatNow · 06/06/2023 21:15

Council tax really varies. Depends where you are. We're in a small town in Hampshire. Remember CT is paid over 10 months not 12.

We have a 3 bed semi

Mortgage £930
Council tax Band C is £176
Water is £24
Gas/Elec is £116

Then there's other stuff you need to consider like contents insurance (assume buildings is covered by your landlord?) TV packages, internet etc.
