How would you organise this child's room?

Pictures below for reference. I feel
Like I'm not making the most of the space and feel that the kids are overwhelmed with stuff that they don't know where/what To play. Happy to get new storage as well. Any ideas? Thanks

Obviously having a clear out would help but I did this just before Christmas so most of this stuff is used

I think you need a big tall unit that will swallow it all and keep it from encroaching elsewhere. Something like the big Kallax units with the squares.

BecauseICan22 · 08/01/2023 12:51

Cull. Cull. Cull.

Every single item in that room is not needed.

Get them to donate or if you don't want to do that, remove items and rotate bringing toys out every quarter and putting away the current quarter.

Do they get a lot of gifts? Consider asking family/friends to put whatever they'd spend on a gift in a savings account.

Less things is the key to organisation, optimising space and the children getting joy from using what they have.

RandomMess · 08/01/2023 12:51

A couple of tall Trofast units would make a massive difference.

RandomMess · 08/01/2023 12:52

I have to say it's very busy and I feel overwhelmed looking at it - the rug, the pattern on the wall etc as well as the toys.

How old are they?

NewNameFor2023 · 08/01/2023 12:52

You could have some bespoke storage made or you can buy Kallax from IKEA and a slim Billy Book case. There’s so much space towards the top of the walls.

rhw bookcase may fit between the bed and window wall - this is the much more narrow one.

opposite the bed you can have Kallax and either use storage boxes in it or the shelves or a mixture of storage boxes and shelves :)

itsgettingweird · 08/01/2023 12:53

Get some stackable boxes for the space at the end of the bed to stop it being wasted space. You'll probably get 5/6 boxes stacked because it's bunk beds.

Also agree with Kallax or similar to replace the current drawers and unit or even some deep drawers along the wall.

GingleAllTheWay2022 · 08/01/2023 12:56

In our house storage has made all the difference. I would get a big Kallax unit, a 3x4 cube maybe. Get boxes for some cubes, drawers for some and leave some open for bigger toys. Put it on it's side so you can use the top for more space or to display bigger/nicer toys.

Get a book sling for near the door. My kids choose books more often when they can see/access them. Swap around the ones in the sling every week or so so they have new choices to engage them.

If you still need more storage I would get stackable boxes from B&M, maybe 20 or 30 litre ones would fit down beside the bed? Make sure they're see-through so the kids can see what's in them and use categories (so an arts and crafts box, a box for action figures, etc.).

Makes life so much easier and I hear 'mum where's my xyz?' far less. They know where things are and where they are expected to put them when they're finished.

Marblessolveeverything · 08/01/2023 12:57

I would put in tall slide door wardrobe on way into room. Shelves for toys now but change to rails later.

I agree with it being very busy, is there another area where it can be more play orientated? Then I would move rug and big toys there.

I always found a calmer bedroom (even just toys out of sight) helped it keep tidy and easier to clean and sleep.

BelleSauvage9 · 08/01/2023 12:57

Looks like it would be tight if not impossible, but would the bed fit against the wall with the door?

Crimsonripple · 08/01/2023 13:01

Another vote for IKEA Kallax units.

Caspianberg · 08/01/2023 13:18

Where do they keep their clothes?

This on the long wall above bed

Get baskets for the shelves already within bed. As can store more that loose.

I would get the ikea bookshelves that wall mount. Like these spice racks www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/eket-wall-mounted-storage-combination-multicolour-light-green-s99437187/#content

These narrow cube shelves on wall as you go in. www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/eket-wall-mounted-storage-combination-multicolour-light-green-s99437187/#content

Agreed.

Dahliasrule · 08/01/2023 13:43

We have stopped the trofasts we had for kallax units. They seem to store so much more. You can get some that are four squares high but not too dominating.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 08/01/2023 13:50

Repainting in neutral colours and with a single-coloured rug (or get rid of the rug) would make it feel more spacious.

stewielouie · 08/01/2023 13:58

I agree with a cull as a start. The chairs are stacked and shoved to the side so are they really needed?
Another vote for getting rid of the overly busy rug. Then I’d put a 4x4 kallax where you’ve got trofast and the plastic drawers. Label the boxes with words and pictures.

caringcarer · 08/01/2023 14:04

I'd repaint it white to give illusion of more space. Get rid of solar system rug as makes room too busy looking. Wall opposite to bed have high selves put up so games etc can live up out of the way. Slim see through storage boxes that fit at bottom of bed good idea. Move some toys out into black sacks into loft and rotate back to bedroom on a monthly basis.

Fritilleries · 08/01/2023 14:54

Way too much stuff! Donate and ditch the bigger toys.

thesurreymum · 08/01/2023 17:15

Thank you for all the fab advice! They are 4&5. Wardrobe is in our smaller 'spare/office/laundry' room. I think I could be more ruthless and charity shop some more toys and a trip to ikea asap. Interesting about the rug I never thought of it as another busy factor to the room.

I actually think it’s fine. It’s a children’s room. It has toys in it. They are neatly tidied away.

Agree, as amazing as the rug is. It sort of looks like there is a pile of toys on the floor at first glance. I would think about removing

I don’t think there’s too many toys. I mean if you can reduce you should but I don’t think it’s bad

Orangefir · 08/01/2023 17:24

Sell the rug and whatever you get for it, buy new storage

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 08/01/2023 17:33

I would move the bed so that it is against a wall. Think that means it has to be at the window end of the room sit looks like there is a pipe boxed in at the door end?
Then shelves filling the space that is left.
Taller storage to replace the stuff opposite the bed.
Paint the green triangles above the bed the same colour as the other walls.
Do you ever use the chairs?
I like the rug!

RandomMess · 08/01/2023 17:40

Can you rotate some of the bigger toys?

We had the tallest trofast so the top few boxes and top of it were toys for rotation or they weren't so have unsupervised.

We had 2 x large shallow pull out drawer under the bed, we used it for duplo but that was great and hidden away.

I agree with the suggestion of a wall hung book sling style thing for the picture books.

We had 3 DC close in age sharing for years and you need to use the height of the room for storage.

Presumably they have toys downstairs for playing with or so they play independently in their room?
