London villages - which areas do you think belong on this list?

I’m looking for a new area of London and, as our search goes on, I realise I also want charm.

I know of Dulwich village (although I am yet to visit!), Victoria Park Village, and Hampstead… where else do you think belongs on the list?

Old Coulsdon. 20 mins to London Bridge and is literally a village with a proper bakery and village shop. London Borough of Croydon. And hills. Lots of hills

Muswell Hill has a massive roundabout in the middle full of buses and traffic. Village it ain't!

I must tell DM that forest gate is a village, she grew up there and would be astounded 😂

Haha...honestly. Round by the station has changed so much!

Definitely Wimbledon Village which even has a large area of 'countryside ' at one end ( the Common) It is certainly less 'villagey' than it was 30 years ago but I do think it still has that vibe.

I was born in a 'proper'village and live in a 'proper' village now and all villages are not the same! Dulwich Village, where I have also lived, really does feel like a village as it is an oasis of calm in the middle of South London.

I would add Herne Hill to your list which has a villagey feel.

DV and HH are most definitely not an oasis of calm! Loads of traffic cut straight through them and around them. Some of the side roads, especially in Dulwich, are narrow.

Much of Dulwich Village and surrounding areas have land owned by Dulwich College. Take care and be aware of any covenants they have installed, or even if your garden is leasehold. I live in the next postcode, in a flat, and they own the car park!

Owned by Dulwich Estate and yes, they can make homeowners’ lives very tricky. Having said that, there seem to be plenty of renovations going on.
They cover land that extends well beyond DV, going into Herne Hill and towards Sydenham.

Are you thinking of East Dulwich? Not many narrow streets in Dulwich Village.

Needmorelego · 08/01/2023 23:30

@SD25 lots and lots of traffic around Dulwich though. I know because my taxi to my daughters school drives through it every morning.

If you fancy South West London, these are my three:
Kew Village is small with friendly shops in a sort of horseshoe. Kew Gardens on the Doorstep and Kew Green with the pubs and Cricket Pavilion is lovely too. Great walks down the river.

Barnes is definitely bigger and has lovely pond with a duck race every year! (Not real ones!). Again a friendly community and lots of shops (a fair few more than Kew!) village pubs, lovely coffee shops etc.

Wimbledon Village is bigger again (I 🤔 think) some fabulous shops and definitely more night life. Walk to Wimbledon for shopping too not to mention the walks on Wimbledon common.

No, not thinking of ED, although it does have narrow streets, too.
DV is essentially a single road, no more than half mile long with clusters of bog-standard shops, cafes and restaurants. There are some large feeder roads into it (College Rd, Gallery Rd, Red Post Hill) but some of the adjacent residential roads are quite narrow. Admittedly fewer than ED but Dulwich is a much much smaller area, probably no more than a 1mile sq before you hit ED, West Dulwich and Herne Hill.
Herne Hill has wide roads.

What about Charlton village? Lovely park and beautiful setting for the library in Charlton House.

Wimbledon Village and Barnes proper. But how on earth can someone say Clapham Junction?!

Abbeville Village maybe? Though that is really just one street…

YukoandHiro · 09/01/2023 06:47

Do villages have wide roads? Surely small roads are part of the village feel?
The only ones on this list I agree with are DV, Highgate and Blackheath. Primrose Hill, Notting Hill etc are all lovely, but they aren't villages

Rina66 · 09/01/2023 06:54

I can remember my daughter telling me she was visiting her friend who had just moved to Brixton Village, I was astounded, when did that happen?

Lucylock · 09/01/2023 07:12

I live near one of these and quite often say 'im going to the village'.My sister who lives in an actual village thinks it's bizarre.😀It is odd , but also just an area. No one is thinking of it as an actual village.

BIWI · 09/01/2023 08:44

With Wimbledon the village is (sort of) separated from Wimbledon town centre, as you have to go up a longish/steepish hill to get to it. So we would say 'I'm going up to the village' and be accurate with that statement!

Trinity65 · 09/01/2023 11:45

Needmorelego · 08/01/2023 14:07

@Trinity65 I think the whole 'village' thing is mostly an estate agent thing.
I mean Dulwich is nice but it's mostly lots of Victorian suburban houses - no more a 'village' than most of London.

True

I remember the 1980s with Estate Agent Speak and helped by the "Yuppies"
Clapham became Cl'am
Whitechapel White Chapell
Funniest was declaring Battersea as South Chelsea though
Hahaha

theremustonlybeone · 09/01/2023 12:05

Rina66 Brixton Village is not an area it is the new name for the done up part of the old market and now has bars and restaurants. So your daughter wouldn't have been visiting her in a home in 'brixton village' maybe meeting her in a bar.
