Curtain poles for bay windows

FuzzyPuffling · 02/01/2023 20:13

I have recently moved into an Edwardian terraced house which has big square bay windows in the sitting room and main bedroom. They really are large!
Currently there are plasticky horizontal blinds at the windows but I defintely need curtains - for warmth, for cosiness, for visual reasons.

I'd like poles rather than more white plasticky tracks.

Has anyone got any recommendations for poles that go round two 90 degree corners? Or could I do three poles - two short ones at the sides and a long one across the front?

I've Googled, I've Amazoned. Now I'm just befuddled.

Oh with hinged curtain hooks, don't try and get them up with curtains on them!

RunRunRunSomeMore · 02/01/2023 21:01

You seem to know the style you're going for so feel free to ignore: but tracks don't have to be either white, or plasticky. Good quality ones designed for heavy curtains are usually metal, and can be bent around bay windows (though possibly not at 90 degrees).

Just sayin'.

Have you looked at silent gliss metropole? It’s a pole with a track so the gliders run easily around tighter corners

NotMeNoNo · 02/01/2023 21:08

How about a track with a fabric covered lath in front to hide the white strip? (See link)
We have bay windows that go right to the ceiling, so only tracks are possible, have resigned myself to tracks but at least the metal ones are more tidy.
The problem with bay window poles is they end up very contrived and not always easy to close, they need a good radius on the corner and passing rings/bent to order to stop the corners sagging. Particularly if you have heavy curtains.

Where is the fitting for it though, just at each end and in the middle?

The problem with bay window poles is that usually the fittings prevent the curtains getting round easily. Thats what put me off

I would love shutters but we have a lot of things on the window sill so I dont think I could do

Fittings either end and in the middle.

Cheers m'dears. Much food for thought here.

I have the neo version from here and it is excellent, very sturdy and not flimsy in slightest (new build with a bay, this will last a long time unlike the straight pole from Dunelm in another room that is just rubbish in comparison!)

When we moved into our current house, bothe square bay windows had 3 curtain poles and 4 curtains.

It wasn't until we were redecorating that we appreciated just how much light the curtains were blocking.
We changed to a curved track (I wasn't keen on a plastic one either, but it's so small it's not noticeable at all) and even though the curtains are much thicker and darker; only having 2 curtains lets in so much more light.

Hi we got our piles from b&q. They sell all the different components and we have done both our bay windows for just under £100 including finals.

This is the corner piece you attatched to piles so you can create any angle you need for your bay x

Hiya
Rewilding Ambridge
I was wondering what the brackets on your bay indow pole are like...?
I think they have changed the brackets recently to the more skinny sort... which the pole sits on, and then there is a piece over the top...
the older ones had the pole go through, amd had a chunkier footprint on the wall.
Thanks

We have a 3-slant-sided bay- large flat centre panel, with a 45-ish degree narrow window to each side, but I want the curtains to run back onto the walls either side to clear the windows completely- which means a backward bend. Most tracks/poles don't do that. Anyone know of any good ones that do?

VintedAllDay · 03/04/2024 15:30

Hello. I know this is an old thread, but did you find a good solution to this, @FuzzyPuffling ?

I have the same problem of a 90 degree bend, and am currently going curtainless.... Looking at some of these options (thank you!).

TIA

FuzzyPuffling · 03/04/2024 17:01

Hello @VintedAllDay
After much deliberation I went with white plastic bendy track. It hurt my heart ( only a bit, truth told!) but actually against the white plasterwork they are almost invisible and the curtains hang and draw just fine.
Also much much cheaper- spend more on the curtains!

Ah - thank you so much! Glad it's worked out.
Did you do the bending yourself?!

I used this one recently and it works well and isn't too expensive. The matching rings that you buy separately are lined and so run smoothly and are quiet

To mention, the company were really helpful, so you could phone up and ask their advice. I couldn't find many other poles available for box bay windows (that weren't bespoke or extortionately expensive)

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 03/04/2024 21:12

So not poles...but we fitted silent gliss tracks they were so good were fitted to the window and didn't look tacky at all.

Also had shutters but bistro style so two thirds up window

billycorn · 03/04/2024 21:21

Soft furnishing professional here. Some really bad advice on this thread. Contact a professional who will measure and supply and fit a bespoke made metal pole. Avoid the likes of Dunelm, it’s cheap rubbish. It will cost ££ but will look spectacular and operate properly.

jannier · 03/04/2024 21:41

Get a metal worker to bend one to size. Choose your finish and your finials

My son in law did one and my builder did the other ( he was here doing another job too). They are very flexible and bend easily! (The curtain tracks rather than the builder)
