Has anyone turned a large bedroom into two smaller rooms

Need to rethink space in my house, and I can’t afford to go into loft or an office room. My bedroom is really big, it’s the biggest upstairs room and I was thinking if there is anyway I could separate it into two smaller rooms, so a medium sized bedroom with a small office? Has anyone done anything like this? Also ideally I’d like to put a small en-suite in there too but obviously space isn’t infinite! Thank you

I am sorry I haven’t done this yet, but also keen to hear others experiences

ScroogeMcDuckling · 31/12/2022 21:26

depends on what the floor plan is, where are the windows etc.

how big is big?

boarding out a loft, putting in a velux (you don’t even need a velux) and a sturdy loft ladder may not be as expensive as you think.

If it’s just to have an office space, why not get a room divider such as a free standing book case?

Kenworthington · 31/12/2022 21:41

I have done this. But it was a room with a window either side and we put a stud wall up down the middle and turned it into two bedrooms which worked really well (apart from obv you had to walk through one to get to the other)

Dougieowner · 31/12/2022 21:43

You need to establish if it can work with where the door & window(s) are or whether moving the existing door could help. If you only have one window is a windowless room even allowed?

Honeyroar · 31/12/2022 21:44

What size is the room and where are the windows?

8misskitty8 · 31/12/2022 21:49

Can you post a Floor plan ?

Jules912 · 31/12/2022 22:01

I briefly considered this as wfh and don't really like having my office in my bedroom. Thought it would be easy as have two windows but then realised that I couldn't get another door in and didn't really want to have to walk through one room to get to the other.

We did something like this. We had a large bedroom with a largish en-suite. We needed a fifth bedroom, so we ripped out the en-suite, moved a wall and then ended up with 2 great bedrooms. The only issue is that you have to walk through one bedroom to get to the other. Having the extra bedroom has been great. It cost about £2000 a few years ago.

My brother has just done this. His house had one quite large bedroom and one double bedroom. The large bedroom had two separate windows and radiators and now it's one box room and a smaller double bedroom. He had the job done professionally to separate the electricity for the light switches etc. It looks fab.

Very crude draw up on a previous floor plan I just took off right move attached.

Yes, we have done this. Big attic bedroom in a back-to-back terrace converted into two bedrooms for dts. We went under the eaves to get more space and had Velux windows fitted. DS room is very small but it’s his space and he loves it. He had a storage cupboard built into the landing. DD’s is bigger and had a built in wardrobe. The whole thing including carpets, decorating and furniture was 4.5K. It’s been a perfect solution and made a massive difference to our lives.

Here is the plan for our upstairs

What is the sq ft of the bedroom you are looking at dividing. Without knowing this, all answers are irrelevant.

Anotherdayinfaradise · 01/01/2023 08:23

It’s the front bedroom- sq footage on the photo. Thank you

Beggingforsleep · 01/01/2023 08:27

It looks like you could get a small office in there but probably not an en-suite as all the plumbing is at the back.

We have that room and our neighbours have a small double and a single both with windows. Our room is a similar size and you create a lobby next to the current door to get 2 separate doors. No room for an ensuite though and where would the pipes go?

KangarooKenny · 01/01/2023 08:33

Not the same, but a neighbour in a typical 3 bed took the back bedroom as the main bedroom, and made the large front room and box room into two equal sized rooms for the kids.
Lots of work, mess and money, but they were happy with it.

Mizydoscape · 01/01/2023 08:45

Your house is a couple feet wider than ours and you have the upstairs bay window which will give the feeling of more space, but our front bedroom was split into 2 before we bought. I use bedroom 3 as my office. They're both definitely singles though.

Glad I found this thread. I am thinking of doing the same.
My huge bedroom was originally two rooms, the previous owner took down the wall and blocked off one doorway to make one huge room, so I am thinking it won't be too hard to make two rooms- I have two windows, so each room will have a window. Unfortunately the previous owner also installed a shower cubicle and a sink, which needs removing- not an en suite, just plonked at one end of the bedroom.
My other option is to turn that into proper en suite- not sure which or any would increase the value of my home- 4 bedrooms one with en suite, or 5 bedrooms with no en suite. There is a large family bathroom with shower and bath, and a separate toilet downstairs.

Thank you all. I do wish we could afford to do the loft but it’s so expensive now where we are.
