Carpet - will this look terrible?

The carpet that came with my flat is light beige wool. Due to multiple stains over the years it looks terrible, and no amount of cleaning helps (I’ve tried all the cleaning hacks, gadgets, and paid for professional cleaning).

The carpet truly makes the flat an awful place to be right now - I feel sad every time I come back home. I was hoping to re-carpet but that wouldn’t be for another few months, as I’m planning an overhaul of the whole place. Money is tight so this might not even happen.

Until then, I was thinking of getting some rugs to try and hide the worst of it. Initially I wanted regular area rugs, but see online that IKEA do massive carpets, which got me thinking: would it look terrible if I got two giant (200x300cm) rugs in the room? There would be 25/75cm of the original carpet visible on the sides if I did this. Could that work or would it just look weird?

I then got thinking about medium-sized carpets, there is another IKEA one (120x180) that would actually perfectly cover my existing carpet if I laid six of them down next to each other. This is also much more cost-effective than two big ones (and probably also easier to send back if I realise I’ve made a huge mistake).

The rugs in question are natural/woven material which DP thinks looks like burlap but I really like. I’d hope that because they’re not as structured/stiff, they’d blend into each other more easily if you see what I mean?

Any other tips for disguising a disgusting stained carpet very welcome, I’m getting desperate here…

If you’re going to recarpet don’t waste money on rugs now. Go to local carpet shops with your measurements: they may have of its / spares that you could buy at less the. Retail price. Sometime people sell carpet on marketplace as well.

I got ones from ikea that sound similar to those you’re talking about. They were very cheap but are equally very rubbish! Just save for a carpet.

I really wouldn't bother, just wait it out. No one, absolutely no one, is judging your carpet. Buy a cheap rug for the centre to distract if bothered, but I really wouldn't waste money on this.

I have a similar situation in our lounge ,I got a lovely rug from IKEA.Larger than any on their website, cost £200 .Can you go and have a look?

I would just get one rug that you actually like and use that to cover the main area of your carpet. Then you are likely to reuse the rug when you redo the flooring, and it won't be a waste of money.

Thank you for bringing me back to earth! I think deep down I knew it was a bad idea but I needed to be told (by someone who’s not my DP)! And good to know re the quality of the rugs @Mrstwiddle

@Theheartmustpausetobreathe i like the sound of that, and I’ll try to get an IKEA trip in soon regardless…

I suppose that just waiting it out is the most sensible option but if there’s a relatively inexpensive way to make it more bearable until the summer I’d love to know… I saw an article about a lady dying her carpet but don’t know if that’s such a good idea for multiple reasons…

Have you had a peek under the carpets? You might have floorboards that are better than the old carpet whilst you save up…

my god dont waste money on rugs ... Rip it up and get rid .. itll give you more incentive to set aside for a new one ...
