Economy 7 / LPG / battery storage - how do I work out what's cheapest?

Hi, moved to a new rural place with no mains gas. in late Nov and have a mix of LPG boiler for centrally heated rads and hot water, and economy 7 electric tariff for a couple of old storage heaters.

LPG 1140 litre tank has gone from 85% full to 50% full in 5 weeks, cost is 57p+VAT per litre plus a standing charge of 34.92 pence per day.

I just got the new pricing through for the e7 electric from Jan and the night rate is about 8p per unit and the day rate 60p a unit.

I am wondering about getting a storage battery to charge up overnight for use in the day to make better use of the cheap rate. I already put washer and dishasher and things to charge on overnight.

But given the night rate on e7 is so cheap, is it worth utilising it for more over and above the LPG, i.e. heating and if so - hw much? Also, I wonder whether worth upgrading and getting more modern storage heaters to also make use of the e7 instead of the LPG heating.

Anyone have any exprience in this area? How can I calculate the cost of LPG v electric? Anyone else got economy 7 and a battery?

Any advice appreciated!🙏

Check if your supplier will give you E10 (many still do).
We were on it for over 20-years as our old house did not have gas and we didn't want to be reliant on oil (getting rid of the oil-tank was a bonus as it was an eyesore).
You get 5hrs cheap-rate at night, 2.5hrs in the afternoon and 2.5hrs in the evening.
Much more flexible and gives you an almost limitless supply of cheap hot water.

I think the problem is that the prices are old. You also have the issue (I believe) that heating oil/lpg probably is not subject to the price cap. So it can get a lot more expensive.

The issue is only you know your electricity use, and whether or not E7 might make sense.

What might make more sense is a pairing of E7 or E10 with say solar instead of a battery. That way the solar would be in use during the day when the electricity price is high and you wouldn't need to pay out a lot for the storage ?

Solar gives useful power on long sunny summer days when you need it least

Not on short, cloudy, dark winter days when you need it most.

Yes exactly - we actually had solar on a previous house (on the same street and also south facing!). Great in summer but barely got anything over winter - not enough to power appliances in the day let alone charge anything.

With solar we'd also have a gap between sundown and teh E7 kicking in at 12.30am or 1.30am which is the main time of day for our usage.

The reason for the battery sugegstion is that the price is fixed on overnight rates so we would get all our electric at that rate. I have no way of calculating accurately what our LPG cost at any given time and I do not believe the price of this will be capped either. A battery is about 4-5k and if we are looking at LPG refills x 4 a year at around 800 a pop plus standing charge of 35p a day, PLUS electricity at 60p a unit (last winter we averaged around 15 units a day so at 60p that's about £270 a month on electric on top of LPG), a battery would surely pay for itself in a year or two max.

No - E10 not avail for us unfortunately....
