Valiant boiler EcoTec - humming sound, like mobile on vibarate

This morning as I was in the kitchen I noted a humming sound just after I turned off the hot water. It was like a light humming sound like the one where you leave a mobile phone on the sofa and are in another room and the frequency of the hum was the same. Then when I turned on the heating it did the same

However, the sound is not there when hot water is running and or heating has kicked in

It happens and DH noted the sound upstairs as one of the bathrooms is directly above it and he was surprised I noted it.

We are with a warranty group and they charge I think 150 to come out and fix and if no fault noted they still charge the same. Therefore we are waiting to see if and more likely when it gets more pronounced.

We've had nothing done to the heating for over 4 months. There are no messages on the boiler to say there is a fault and water levels are normal DH stated and not moved. Heat and hot water works but dH is 100% sure it was not happening before and I agree with him

Any tips?

Run the hot tap on full for a good 3-4 minutes and it’ll stop.

I have an ecotech valiant system boiler.

It does seem to "switch on" sometimes when there is no heating demand.

I don't know what it is doing but I would like to know. It sounds like a small fan or maybe the water being pumped. I don't think it is damaged because it is very new.

If you have a combi boiler it may be the pre-heat function.

My Vaillant makes noises. The last time I asked a plumber why it was making noises like metallic creaking or groaning he said it wouldn't do any harm. I've ignored it since. Mind, the boiler is over ten years old. But it's still chugging away at its work as it should.

I'd say don't panic about a noise but if you are worried, post your question on the plumbers / boiler forum or DIYnot forum. Lots of heating engineers on there. Or just post your query as a search and lots of other sites of that kind will come up.

It sounds like it is the diverter valve motor changing from heating to hot water position. If you turn power to the boiler off and then back on again the motor will operate the same way for a few seconds. If you wanted to check that’s what it is. They are quite loud but I expect it’s louder than usual or you would have noticed it before?

Not sure if this helps, but I had a Ecotech Valliant combi boiler in my old house, which periodically made a loud buzzing sound. It seemed to do it at random, inconsistent times. It was serviced annually and obviously never made the noise when the engineer was present, but we mentioned it and they weren't concerned and always said the boiler was fine. This went on for several years and we eventually moved out - it's probably still buzzing away now.

I assume you've checked the pressure OP? The pressure on my combi boiler is up and down like a yo-yo and I adjust it often - it was recently serviced. It makes a windy noise when it's low (heating off) but is quieter when the heating is on. Plumber says it goes with the territory of this type of boiler - you have to keep and eye on it but it's normal, apparently.

I am a heating engineer!

Thanks all.
DH has checked the water levels all the same as always. It's just a light humb like one from a mobile phone when on vibe only and placed on a sofa in another room. If you were to be in our kitchen you may not notice it.
Its working fine atm

Thanks all and more help welcome

ps - not calling anyone out atm as we feel they wont do anything other than charge us good money for a callout
