Help with living room layout

Looking for help and layout ideas for the living/dining room, and the middle space between the living room and kitchen.

We moved in November and have placed our old furniture but it all feels odd. And we may have to replace our old stuff to improve the layout.

Any ideas appreciated, see image.

Your living room could do with an additional armchair or sofa perhaps? Looks a bit barren!

How is moving around the kitchen island? Looks a little tight to the wall with the radiator.

Can you mount your tv above the fire, and use that space for an armchair and coffee table?

Get a bigger settee or 2 sort of at an angle towards each other

Or get an arm chair on opposite side of fire from TV to make it easy for conversations

A triangle situation TV and 2 settees or arm chairs and settee

So everyone can see TV and chat to each other

Could you put an interesting desk or table in front of but below the window or some shelves with interesting books or items above radiator at end of hallway to make a focal point when you come in the door

or a picture or a large mirror to reflect the light back again, if it isn't a window at the end of the hallway

Some photos of the areas would really help please

Hmm, this is a tricky one. the floor plan seems to give you a lot of odd shaped empty spaces that aren't easy to use, like the room at the end of the hall (yellow S). would it work to put a comfy chair (C) and bookshelves here to make a reading space? and a nice rug?

If you had the money, I'll probably want to re-arrange various walls to get a much bigger dining room all across the back and possibly a separate living room. But if we aren't moving walls, then how about

  • move the dining table out from the wall & make it a feature. put a bench (B) against the wall so people can sit on that side but it doesn't take up too much space.
  • add a small chair in the living room (C) and move the sofa along a bit
  • add rugs and art on the walls to make the space feel lived in.

Is the problem the two sets of bifolds in the kitchen? - it seems a bit of overkill, although it may be for the purpose of letting in more light.
If you closed off the bifolds on the NE wall (keep just a window) then you could use that for the dining table (remove the island). The kitchen will then gravitate towards the other end of the room. You could then create the more traditional 'triangle' workspace (sink / cooker / fridge) instead of the current one-wall. Use the 'middle space' (especially under the stairs) as overflow storage / pantry.

The current dining area then becomes a cosy corner off the sitting room with more storage possibilities. You can also make a nice outdoor space in the area between the two remaining bifolds, creating an extra 'room' between the dining room and the cosy corner.

Do you need the fireplace? You could remove it and thereby release extra space.

What kind of roof does the kitchen have?

If it is pitched then put in light tunnels on the south east side of the pitch and you will get so much light in

As the rooms basically face north and then one kitchen bi fold west it could be quite dark and you probably won't open the north ones will you?

So you could put a kitchen table up against the north bi fold kitchen as the best light will come from the west windows
