Knock down wall or conservatory

I am happy with the overall size of our house, however I would like one larger space for when family are over. I’m considering either knocking the kitchen and dining room together or adding a conservatory that would attach to the conservatory.

which do people think would be best.

I’m tempted with the knocking kitchen/dining room together because I think the overall space is fine and I’ve never much liked conservatories off living rooms.

anything to consider that I might not have thought of?

we need a floorplan and dimensions 😀

I’m not a fan of open living, or conservatories, I’d build a sun lounge extension.

I’m not a fan of conservatories either really. I don’t want it all open plan, but I do miss our old house with joint kitchen diner. Our diner is just too small too get in and out comfortably.

Knock the wall down, it will be so much warmer than a conservatory!

I would knock the wall down first and redesign that space, and then see how you feel

Stripedbag101 · 27/12/2022 19:05

I only like open plan kitchen / dining / living space if there is a separate sitting room.

Do you use the dining room? Could you turn it into a small sitting room?

I have to say I have found conservatories quite a difficult Spencer - they are either freezing or boiling. I had a sunroom in a previous house and didn’t really use it. It wasn’t as bad as a conservatory but was quite difficult to heat (despite being quite modern and well insulated).

Knock the wall down, you'll love it.

KentishMama · 27/12/2022 20:02

Are you sure you're okay with losing the utility room? What are you going to do with the stuff that's in there at the moment - where will your washing machine go? And what's the plan for the side door?

I hate conservatories, so would always vote for knocking down walls instead. But losing the utility room could be something that you'll regret later on.

Also, you will end up with a long narrow kitchen diner. Consider how you'll furnish it before your schedule the work in. :)

You could put the utility room in the garage and then combine the old utility with the dining room to get a bigger front lounge L

Also knock kitchen K into new dining room D.

Obviously this only works if you don't mind using the garage space.

Thanks for the replies. Loosing the utility won’t be such a big deal because actually it’s so small we often have the door open between the kitchen and utility making it feel like the same space anyway. Potentially we might knock a door to the garage and look at making that a bette utility in the future.

I would keep the side door but invest in a newer one.

the dining room isn’t big enough to use as a living room. So i would keep the living room as is and simply knock kitchen/diner/utility all in to one.

I think I would pretty much keep the kitchen exactly the same as it’s a good size, I just want it all more open as all the walls make each space feel not quite big enough.

Ooohbi handy thought about doing it like this. I’ll ponder on it. Just not sure the proposed living room would be wide Enough.

This looks so much like our house- the garage has been converted to a huge play room for the children with a tv . Combine the diner and kitchen ! We knocked the wall down and it's a great space . There is an alcove to go into the living room too so it's seperate.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 27/12/2022 21:08

I would knock the kitchen, diner and utility together. If you had the space and money later you could add a utility for the washer dryer to the right hand side of the house accessed by the external door as presumably the plumbing is very nearby. You can always stack the washer and dryer if it’s a squeeze rather than side by side.

Utility room and study/playroom in the garage. And kitchen, utility room and dining room combined into one large kitchen diner.

Yep this is what I’m thinking of doing. Probably more useable and cheaper than doing a conservatory I think.

I do keep thinking about converting the garage. However we don’t have access to garden out the back other than via a think side path, so the garage is handy for stuff like bikes etc .

I would absolutely move the utility to the garage.

Merge kitchen and dining room OR kitchen and lounge depending on house aspect and which you think you would prefer.

RandomMess · 27/12/2022 22:29

The kitchen diner merged is a better shape as the current dining room is small/narrow as a lounge.

parietal · 28/12/2022 11:38

why not convert half the garage? so keep half as a bike store, and make the other half into a utility room.
