Desk and guest bed arrangements

We have a smallish room which needs to be an occasional guest room and a daily office. It could just about squeeze in the required desk, bookcase, and double bed. I think the ideal scenario would be a Studybed, but it's so expensive.

My parents, the main users, refuse to use sofabed (even when I previously bought a very expensive one much comfier than a traditional one). I think a fold up bed would be refused too. Not sure whether to have a standard bed out all the time or if there's another alternative I could look at? What would you do?

Put comfy sofa bed in

Parents can choose to sleep on it or pay themselves for a hotel

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 23/12/2022 16:57

Do your parents stay with you so often that they should get a say in the furniture you choose?

Ultimately you live there every day and need it to be an office so if sofa bed is the only good option then they'll have to sleep on it or not stay.

decorecor · 23/12/2022 17:02

I'm trying to fix the problem that they don't stay. We'd see them more often if they would stay (which I'd love). They are lovely and not generally picky, I think it's just getting on in years and bad experiences of sofabeds and so on. They say they need a higher bed as well.

Could they stay in your bed, and you sleep on the sofa bed? We do this when my parents come to us

Trying to avoid this too though have done it in the past. I've got a cot attached to the bed and everything set up for feeding half the night every night, plus the changing table is in our room, and it also results in having to wash and dry 2 sets of bedding instead of 1 when I already struggle for drying space! It's not worth it for one night at a time - I'd rather have a dedicated bed.

Or get a single that looks like a divan bed, but has another full single underneath it. Both have proper mattresses at proper bed height. Ours has mattresses that zip together to make a superking bed. Though for this to work you have to be able to fit a superking in the room. In our case it means that the desk chair gets moved to another room, and the bed is right up against the desk.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 23/12/2022 17:25

Would the sofabed, with a decent mattress topper work? Would you be able to store the topper somewhere?

Wouldn't solve the height, but futon on a fold up base?

A Murphy bed?

Yes, this might be an option, thanks. It's essentially what the Studybed is but it has the desk as part of it. I can't seem to find a cheaper version that would work as well.

They are about as far from CFers as you can get, actually. They have used AirBnB so far uncomplainingly but don't have money so don't come often (or it's a very brief midday visit so it's all done in one day without staying over). I also can't afford to pay for regular AirBnBs, as well as the fact we have other guests sometimes, so I really do want to have a guest bed that will work for everyone!

Was just checking Next as I'm sure a few months ago they had a double bed in their Bronx range that was a standard double and then had a desk/shelf built on the end. They don't seem to have it anymore but it's worth checking when they get their new ranges in after the Xmas sale.

greenacrylicpaint · 23/12/2022 17:39

how about an ikea hemnes daybed.
single bed/sofa but you can pull it out to a double.

but tbh, if your parents don't like your guest areangement they need to come up with their own solution.

RandomMess · 23/12/2022 17:44

Get a desk that you can dismantle easily for when you have visitors.

I have an ikea desk and set of drawers no other office furniture. Do you really need a bookcase in there too?

This was going to be my suggestion. I’m not sure you need a whole kingside amount of room though?

Season0fTheWitch · 23/12/2022 17:49

We had an IKEA hemnes bed in our old spare room. Proper mattresses and bed set up, not a sofa or usual trundle. Check FB marketplace if you're on a budget

SleekMamma · 23/12/2022 17:50

IKEA hemnes daybed with the mattresses they like on them.

NoSquirrels · 23/12/2022 17:51

Ah, you do need room for a king size if you do the pull out guest beds- but it’s still a good solution if you can fit it by hook or crook- like this

The hemnes bed is great - my niece slept on hers all the time and then pulled it out into a double when she had friends to stay. It's really really comfy!!!

spiderontheceiling · 23/12/2022 18:29

I need the same.
I have a large desk (takes two screens etc), a bed like the IKEA one mentioned set up as a single and a unit which is a single wardrobe on one half and drawers on the other.
When in work mode (95% of the time), the drawers have work stuff in them and the wardrobe bit is largely inaccessible.
When in guest room mode, the drawers are emptied with the items balanced precariously in our room, the desk moved so only one end of it is accessible and I put a mirror on that so it can be used more as a dressing table, the unit with the wardrobe/drawers is turned 90 degrees so both bits can be accessed (well, if you're slim) and then the under bed pulled out and set up. It was a bit of a faff the first time but, now I'm used to it, takes less than 30 mins to re-arrange each time.

decorecor · 23/12/2022 21:16

Thanks all! I'll have a look at Next and IKEA and measure up again but not sure a king would fit in any direction. I can't really remove or dismantle a desk either. One time they would be likely to stay is during the week in school holidays to help with the kids and I'd still be working from the moment they woke up essentially (I work exclusively from home). I have multiple monitors, printer, and various other bits, so it's not as simple as just lifting a laptop off and there's no other room I could work in.

Honestly I wish the Studybed was so much cheaper as I love how everything stays on the desk, and the bedding stays on the bed, and it seems like it could so quickly flip back and forth even if they stayed a few nights. IKEA or some other cheaper shop need to make a copycat version that's more affordable!

Until then, I'll look up all the Murphy and trundle beds and see what could work.

OP posts:
WhiteFire · 23/12/2022 21:45

I was going to suggest a trundle bed too.

Letsnotargue · 23/12/2022 21:52

There are a few studybeds on eBay etc. They are still quite pricey but nowhere near what they are new. Worth keeping an eye out because I bet they get sold on as they’re barely used.

Chatrattoria · 23/12/2022 21:56

If you ever find yourself with some money to throw at the problem I suggest This desk. You’ve got to buy the String shelves for it to go on. You can get it from various places but This store has a sale on.

Then you might have room for a normal double bed?
