Bathroom layout

We recently bought a little grade ii listed cottage with one bathroom and no other loo. We want to try and split the current bathroom into 2 shower rooms with 2 loos but can't think how to do it!

We are really restricted as we can't move internal walls or make new doorways through existing walls as it's listed but think we could get away with adding stud walls inside the room.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is it even possible?! It's approx 3.5m x1.5m and has a wide window which would have to be in one shower room and couldn't be split...obvs wouldn't want to walk through one room to get to the other. Help!

I don't think it is possible if you can't make a doorway from the bedroom.

Short of having two side-by-side walk-in wet rooms like I have seen on boats, I can’t see how you can do it.

layoutdilemma · 23/12/2022 12:09

Thanks for replying Smile I hadn't thought of a wet room - perhaps that might work for one as then I wouldn't need a shower enclosure. DH suggested having a shared basin to save room but I can't see how that could work...,

Leave the basin where it is and divide the rest of the space between the wetrooms.

Mind you, “rooms” is stretching it a bit. They would be cubicles with not much elbow room. OK on a boat but maybe a bit small for a house.

Thanks Oakbeam I agree 'rooms' is probably stretching it a bit!! 2 teenage DDs and me and DH with just a shower attachment on the bath & 1 loo does not make for a good family atmosphere in the mornings!!Wink

it's a bit frustrating that we can't take any walls down but we did know this when we bought so I was just posting in the hope that someone had an idea we hadn't thought of!

I think 2 showers, 2 loos and 2 sinks is too much.
You might manage a shower room, and a separate loo - maybe with the sink ontop of the cistern. Will find a picture of explain my bad description!
Would a second loo help or not?

I live in a G2 cottage and had a similar issue.

First thing is do you really need two showers, or just 2 loos? This obviously depends on how many of you live there/visit. I ended up with a 2nd loo, which worked very well and I realised that a second shower would hardly ever be needed.

Secondly are you sure you have considered all options about where to put the second loo/shower? Old houses are odd shapes and I managed to find a dead space to fit my new loo. If there’s any chance, share some floor plans of the whole property.

The window makes things difficult doesn’t it.

Also, I assume you have to arrange things so that the new plumbing ties in with the existing, externally?

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 23/12/2022 13:15

I wouldn't bother changing it. You just have to be more organised in the mornings. 4 people and one bathroon is perfectly livable in. You would be making an ok size bathroom into 2 really teeny tiny bathrooms with 1 with no window and all the issues that can bring. Just make 1 amazing bathroom is my opinion.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 23/12/2022 13:17

I should of added. If you are set on it, you could make it an ensuite for bedroom 4 and then have the family bathroom with access in the same place. That would be a massive compromise to me though and make it 2 tiny bathrooms.

LetItGoHome · 23/12/2022 13:54

I think you would just end up making 2 uncomfortable spaces. Is there any way of squeezing in a toilet with possible shower downstairs? You can get a toilet in to a very small under stairs space. Or pinch a bit of space from the kitchen or next to it?

LibertyLily · 24/12/2022 01:11

Seeing a floor plan of the whole cottage would definitely help as there might be other options. Definitely agree that two shower rooms in that bathroom space would be terribly tiny.

We looked at doing something similar in our last house but eventually gave up as - despite my DH being a bathroom designer in a previous life, lol - we couldn't get over how small the two resulting rooms would be...plus one would've been windowless.

We were fortunate to have a loo on the ground floor and there were only two of us living in the (four bed) property so not so much of an issue except when we had guests staying over.
