What is the smallest return on a run of units?

Having an extension built and Tring to design my kitchen which will essentially me a long run with an island. Thinking maybe a small return of 400mm with a corner bookcase may give a bit more detail. Has anyone done with or got photos, woukd it look ridiculous.

Obviously that would make it a 1000mm wide in total.

All that will do is give you an awkward corner cupboard with no real benefit

Merlott · 20/12/2022 15:41

What do you mean? The distance between the island and wall units?

Imtoooldforallthis · 20/12/2022 16:09

No I mean a corner on the end of the run, thinking of putting corner shelves above.

I don’t understand what the point would be. It just leaves you with a dead corner of workspace and an awkward cupboard

Imtoooldforallthis · 20/12/2022 16:23

Well it would have a normal corner base unit and then shelving on the wall. I wish I could post photos my phone. As in my current kitchen I have similar bit not corner shelves and the return is bigger

Similar to this but would be a corner one.

I would keep it as a straight run. The space you gain will be offset by dead /less accessible space in the corner and a section of worktop you can't stand in front of or put drawers under.

True but every plan I've had done is just a boring straight run I'll have 3 tall cupboards wit fridge, freezer and oven and then an extractor and I'm trying to fit in some nice rustic shelving, but I can't seem to get the design right. No top cupboards, and no windows.

I don't know why I wouldn't be able to stand in front of it.

So this effect but up to the ceiling and with sides on it but no bottom shelf, like in the photo.

I'm struggling to visualise what you mean without a plan of the room but I think a long straight run against a wall with an island in front sounds very sleek looking

Imtoooldforallthis · 20/12/2022 16:56

I think that's what I'm struggling with, I don't want sleek, although I do want clean lines, but on an evening I want candles, fairylights, all my oak sharing boards on display, but not on the surfaces, ideally I'd have scaffold board shelves but how to blend them in with the tall cupboards and an extractor on one run.

Would it work if you split the tall cupboards so f&f at one end and ovens at the other? Or put the ovens under the island with the hob above them with a pop-up extractor?

Imtoooldforallthis · 20/12/2022 17:03

This is the nearest I can find, return would be quite a bit smaller, but would be next to bifold and instead o cupboard it would be shelves.

I was planning om having sink on island, and if you have the pop up extractors you have to have an additional extractor as well.

That return looks at least 600mm. 400mm is just over half the width of a standard cupboard. Will just look a bit odd I think. Can you draw it in the IKEA kitchen app and then use the 3D tool to look at it.

iknowimcoming · 20/12/2022 17:14

We didn't have to have an additional extractor but we built our house 4 years ago so maybe that's a new thing?

It's a very personal choice having a sink or hob on an island (I've seen enough arguments about it on here over the years to know) but I've got my hob on my island and sink against wall and wouldn't change it. The island tends to be the nicer looking area and is very sociable when you're cooking and we have the dishwasher behind (and inevitably dirty stuff waiting to go in it) further away from the table so less visible. My layout is almost the same at the Pinterest photo with the hob and sink reversed and no return though so I'm probably biased!

The problem is that the style of kitchen you are saying you want I.e candles and rustic is at odds with having lots of full height cupboards, which tend to be a more minimalist design.

justasking111 · 20/12/2022 17:20

Is this what you mean. Inset hob, hood above, ?

Also why not just have the shelving above the straight run. Personally I think corner shelving just ends up liking busy and again gives you dead space

I don't know why I wouldn't be able to stand in front of it.

Because the corner bit of worktop will be in the way.

Thank you that was what I was asking.

I totally agree, but I either have tall cupboards or an American frisge freezer.
