Advice needed on fitting charge

BIL fitted us two new oak worktops, along with a Belfast sink and new taps (we paid for all of this) He needed to cut around the gas hob and also cut one of the worktops to size.

He did a really good job and completed over 2 weekends (working half days each day) with help from his plumber Dad.

We stupidly didn't agree a price before. BIL isn't a tradesmen, is just very handy. So neither of us have any idea how much this would cost a professional. He doesn't want to rip us off, and we don't want to short change him!

Any advice on what we should pay him will be gratefully appreciated.

I assume he chose to do it on a weekend because he was working, rather than a normal tradesman would be charging time and a half for weekend work.

I'd say about £25 per hour (to account for the fact that his dad helped as well. Based on half day working say £200? You would pay around £35-£40 per hour for an actual tradesman on normal working time but there would be a lot of overheads for them.

So two men, for half days, on two weekends. So four working days in total. I think you'd need to start with at least 400 quid.

I think you are right. I'd said £200 on the basis of them working Saturdays only, I forgot about Sundays.

Ask them.

Ask who?

You'd be lucky to get someone skilled for less than 250 per day.

Your BIL sorry if unclear.
