Malvern Vs Worcester

Hi all,

I have got a new job in Worcester Royal Hospital and looking for a place to live near Worcester. I have a 3 year old starting school in September.

Which is better place to live ? Malvern or Worcester?

My thoughts are - I want this to be my last move, would like good schools for my son, do not want to kill myself travelling to work daily and want to love coming to peaceful home plus would like good food to be delivered when I feel like ( priorities in this order)

what would you think of the pros and cons living in Malvern Vs Worcester.

many thanks

I think you would find more to do in Worcester (kids stuff, restaurants, etc.) but you would find the peace you are after in Malvern. Might be worth looking at some of the villages in between to her best of both worlds?

I lived in Worcester for a year and personally found it too busy as it was a city. Malvern is a lovely town with lots of amenities and is semi-rural so close enough to Worcester for work and other activities and there's also lots of places to go walking if that appeals to you.
It depends what type of area you're after but Malvern is more peaceful. In between Worcester and Malvern is lots of small villages which also seem lovely.

Hope this helps :)

Malvern is lovely but probably more expensive than some areas of Worcester. Depends what you are looking for eg schools or other facilities. I love both Worcester and Malvern. Feel free to PM me as I have worked at WRH although I don’t live in Worcester but fairly familiar with the area

beachmum1 · 17/12/2022 17:07

I think pershore is nice in that area

RM2013 · 17/12/2022 17:10

Pershore is lovely, Drakes Broughton and lots of lovely areas surrounding. @Mumscorner are you fairly local at the moment?

Kindofcrunchy · 17/12/2022 17:21

Probably depends on your budget. There are some nice bits of Malvern and some really awful bits. We used to used in Malvern link, which wasn't too bad but still pretty pricey. There are some very affordable areas of Worcester too but I definitely wouldn't want to live there!

Mumscorner · 17/12/2022 17:24

Hi @RM2013 , I am not local and haven't got anyone I know locally .

I have liked affordable houses in both these places. But just considering the school and commute and other things as above, I wonder what is better..

I can't imagine you'd get any delivery food apart from pizza in Malvern, and then only in the town itself. Even Worcester as a city sufffers from being too close to Birmingham, so they're isn't as much to do as there should be for a small city.

moonlight1705 · 17/12/2022 17:33

Also, if you are having to come from Malvern to Worcester Royal then you'll have to use the bypass. At the moment it is hideous with traffic and takes three times as long as you would expect to navigate.

I would stay on the right side of the river and aim for places towards Pershore. My Dsis used to live in Wadborough and loved it there.

moonlight1705 · 17/12/2022 17:34

Drakes Broughton had an excellent primary school but not so sure about its senior school catchment.

marleyandme · 17/12/2022 17:37

If you're going to be working at the hospital I'd recommend staying that side of the river. Malvern is the wrong side of the river and the traffic at rush hour can be horrendous.
There's plenty of nice surrounding villages near Worcester if you want a bit more quiet but not long of a commute, suggesting Kempsey, Fernhill Heath, Crowle. They'd put you not far from the amenities of the city but still feeling quite rural.

JanBabiesBrummyMummy · 17/12/2022 17:41

Droitwich is an easy drive to WRH and has good schools. No direct public transport to the hospital though

CMOTDibbler · 17/12/2022 17:50

I really wouldn't want to drive from Malvern everyday to WRH, it takes way longer than you'd think even with the doubling of the link roads, and flooding messes up that route.
Pershore is great for kids as there is enough to do but they can get around by themselves, and the school gets good results esp at A level

froomeonthebroom · 17/12/2022 17:56

I live in Malvern and love it, grew up very nearby so been here all my life. I would echo what others say about travelling to the hospital from Malvern, it can take a ridiculous length of time although I believe the bypass has improved matters a bit.

We have excellent schools here, including 2 great secondaries. Feel free to PM me if you want info on a specific area.

borntobequiet · 17/12/2022 20:22

Listen to what others have said. If working at WR Hospital don’t consider living in Malvern.

It's difficult to comment without knowing what type of place you're moving from. For some, Worcester is the "big" city, but if you're used to living in a major city, it will be like living in a small provincial town! It really is very tiny. It has a decent high street, cinemas, a new indoor crazy golf centre and quite decent restaurants. On the plus side there are plenty of properties available in nice streets within walking distance to town which really cuts down driving. The train station is well connected to outlying towns - pershore, evesham, malvern, droitwich if you needed a more rural fix. Personally, I find malvern quite bland really - there's just something missing there, with a real lack of restaurants and bars/ leisure activities and because it's separated into several villages it's very disjointed and doesn't really have a proper centre. Sure, the hills are beautiful but there's only so much hill walking you can do in the depths of winter. It's only 6 minutes by train from Worcester so you wouldn't be missing out anyway. what type of property would you be looking for - Victorian or new build , as this will also affect your search. Generally the new build s are situated in warndon villages which is close to the hospital but not walking distance to town.

Mumscorner · 18/12/2022 09:24

Thank you all. Your input helps. I have narrowed down to a property I like in both these places. I understand schools in both places are good. Commute appears to be an issue from Malvern. And obviously there are differences that a village and a small city would have.

Will sit down and think over all these.
