Replacing blown double glazed glass…. Costs?

Hi,I realise this will vary on location.

We have several windows that have blown,I’ve lived here for 18 years so the double glazing is older than that.

In an ideal world I’d get new double glazing entirely but there’s no way I can afford this so looking to replace the blown windows. Do you think this will be a lot cheaper and has anyone done this?

FYI we live in a 1930’s typical terrace. About 8 windows have blown.

also,are blown windows less insulating?!

Sorry, I can't remember the figures, but I do remember thinking replacing the blown glass was much cheaper than I expected it to be when we had it done a couple of years ago. Also, no problem doing it from inside the room - no scaffolding needed etc.

unsync · 13/12/2022 22:32

If they have blown, they have lost the seal between the panes of glass which creates the insulating air barrier.

£100 a window pane a couple of years ago to replace blow double glazing. Midlands

We replaced a couple of the sealed units, cost roughly £70 for the 2 units to refit ourselves.

I just got a quote for this and it was less than I was expecting, under £200 for 2 medium-sized windows.

Shunkleisshiny · 13/12/2022 22:41

One of our kitchen window panes blew (30" x 15" ) bought a new unit for £15 and dh fitted it himself. This was about 5 years ago, I was astounded how cheap ( and easy) it was.

eurochick · 13/12/2022 22:46

It was also cheaper than I was expecting - just over £100 per pane I think.

I had one replaced earlier this year, cost £70

Thanks everyone, similar prices quoted.

and thanks @unsync more important than ever to get it sorted then!

Is it possible to replace with triple glazing rather than double ?

Marmitepot · 14/12/2022 00:12

I’d imagine that would be even more expensive. Plus we have shutters so no room.

also,I don’t want triple glazing

Surprisingly triple glazing not necessarily better than double.

XingMing · 14/12/2022 20:15

It's not very expensive to replace the glazed units. Ovbiously it varies with size. The largest of ours are pretty big and cost maybe £300 apiece. There are also different grade of technical glass and gas flushed/planitherm considerations to take into account, but I am not your expert guide here.

Thankyou @XingMing
