Do I need a new glass shower door?

If the corner of the glass door above my bath looks like the photo, do I need to buy another one?

The bathroom was re done 5 years ago but it doesn't seem to be surviving well. I don't know if I should just change the shower door and call it quits for another 5 years?

This has got be one of the weirder parts of being an adult. Random decisions like this.

Is it cracked?

ArcticSkewer · 06/12/2022 07:16

Does it need re-sealing? I am assuming it is the escaping water you are worried about - presumably new sealant would help but if it's cracked, that's another matter (safety really, otherwise just whack sealant over the crack as well)
You can also take the plastic strips off to clean.
I'd spray bleach spray on

tanstaafl · 06/12/2022 07:24

are you wondering whether the internal vertical sealing strips on the door hinge that are old and worn and that’s why you can see a drip line outside?

i would be surprised if you can’t source replacement strips from supplier or the wider internet.

If it's any comfort, OP, I find stuff like that dispiriting too. Just a constant drip drip of stuff that needs replacing or serious cleaning!

If you are just worried about the cosmetics, vinegar helps with lime scale, and bleach with black grunge. Toothbrush helps get in the corners. And try and keep it dry- wipe it off after use.

Replace the seals and sealant when you can.

SunRainFog · 06/12/2022 10:39

It's less the limescale and more the bit of the door on the bottom that's rusted / rotten.

I'd probably just replace it with a shower curtain.

SunRainFog · 06/12/2022 10:42

I think that's a better photo/ closer angle. I'm concerned the door is going to fall off if it's not attached to something at the bottom. The hinge bit is totally black looking

Such a fucking faff these things. Is it important or isn't it? How am I supposed to know?

I hate shower curtains. They stick to you, they grow mould at stupid rates and I would have to have those annoying curved railings.

I just need to know if the door is going to fall off or if I can ignore it

They really don't wear well do they. My bathroom was fitted by DH 20 years ago with an overbath curved shower screen. It was extortionately expensive at the time but there was no chrome on it and the rubber seal was white not clear. It still looks like it did when it was fitted. He fitted DS's bathroom 4 years ago and it looks just like yours, it won't clean properly, the rubber seal keeps going orange and collects black mould underneath were you can't clean it and really needs replacing.

Ours looked like this then it fell off and smashed all over the bathroom. I hate shower curtains too but went for one in the end in an attempt to avoid the same happening again...

I'd replace it but get one with a half decent guarantee

Fuuuuuuuck

It looked like this...no warning and our then one year old was in the bath at the time. Miraculously no-one was hurt!

Look on screwfix to see if there are replacement fittings.

But they are cheap and have the significant advantage that replacing them is a 2 minute job and a minor life decision.
