Paint - cheaper alternative

Does anyone know of a similar/ colour match to Natural Hessian by Dulux?

I really like this colour but I am on a budget but wondered if anyone knew of a similar, cheaper alternative. I've attached a picture of the colour.

Cheap paint can often be rubbish paint. At least with Dulux/Crown etc you get a high level of quality.
Get the Dulux and economise elsewhere.

I've used wilko own and Wickes own brands and they are good quality. I've had a similar colour from Wickes.

WeAreTheHeroes · 06/12/2022 07:19

My BIL rates Wilko paint. They've probably got something similar. That said, I agree with the pp that cheaper paint just isn't as good. The Dulux you buy off the shelf is not as good as the trade version - it contains more water. Economise elsewhere and buy the best paint you can.

That said, if you're only painting one wall or a small room you might be lucky on local Facebook pages asking if anyone has any left over. It's a pretty popular colour.

I agree with this. I'm still sour about the money I spent on own brand paint. After two patchy coats I went out and bought some Crown paint instead. I was only painting white over magnolia so I didn't think it would matter. That being said, I didn't check the reviews before purchase. If I had, I would have seen loads of reviews complaining that it was like water and worked out more expensive and time consuming than branded.

Natural Hessian is one of my favourite shades too OP. I have only ever bought Dulux, usually easycare. Paint is one of the items over the years that I think is worth spending on for a good quality finish. Thinner paint may need more coats so it can be a false economy. Good luck with your project.

Curtaintwitcher72 · 06/12/2022 07:55

I would find a local trades supplier that allows public customers too and see if they can mix it for you. It should work out cheaper and you'll also get a far superior quality of paint that professional decorators use. I honestly wouldn't skimp if you want it to look good.

Lonelycrab · 06/12/2022 08:01

Another saying don’t skimp. Dulux isn’t that dear anyway. Cheap paint = less pigment so you’ll just need more of it anyway.

TheFormidableMrsC · 06/12/2022 10:47

Wilko are good and also the Johnstone range in B&M. They have a vast array of shades. However, I've often found it's a false economy with cheaper paints as you tend to have to use more unfortunately

NotMeNoNo · 06/12/2022 10:54

Paint is not the most expensive part of DIY. I would seriously suggest buying Dulux or Dulux Trade. Two coats, job done. Otherwise you will be sobbing into the fourth coat or at the weird finished colour.

HarrietSchulenberg · 06/12/2022 11:09

Having skimped once on paint I am confident I won't go lower than Dulux/Crown again. Took 4 coats and went patchy within a year.
If you buy Dulux One Coat you can eke it out by mixing it 80/20 paint to water if you've already got a clean, pale undercoat. In fact, do this anyway if you're painting in a warm room as it will dry too fast and crack.

Agree with Curtaintwitcher72. Find a local Johnstones Decorator Centre and take in the Dulux card (and colour code). They serve trade and public customers and will likely be able to mix you up a pot for less than you'd pay for the Dulux. I've had them exactly colour match Farrow and Ball colours (they have the codes and colour mixes in their computers) which end up being ~half the price of F&B.

Toomanysleepycats · 06/12/2022 11:27

Brewers have a lovely range of colours in their Albany Range. They are usually found in trading estates but they happily sell to the public. You can even get an account and they give you a discount when you buy.

They will also mix up colours which usually work really well. That saying duplicating some Farrow and Ball colours is really hit and miss. I believe this is due to F&B using natural pigments which are hard to match exactly.

I actually prefer Crown to Dulux these days when it comes to gloss paint. Crown satin finish works well. I used to use Dulux but a few years ago paint companies had to decrease the amount of volatiles in oil based paints and the Dulux version didn’t cover as well.

I’ve eventually moved over to water based satin gloss paints which I think have improved a lot.

WeAreTheHeroes · 06/12/2022 19:56

I really don't think Johnstone's will be able to colour match Dulux for less than the likes of B&Q sell it ready mixed. It'll be a better quality paint, but it won't be cheaper.

Thank you all for your feedback. My husband found a Johnstone version similar price to crown but this is 10L not 5L that Crown does. I've attached the photo. I'm hoping this turns out good if not I'm going to invest in crown.

Johnstone paint is excellent, it's what a decorator friend recommended to us.
