new house heating system mind boggling

stevalnamechanger · 05/12/2022 20:36

Is there some kind of service to pay for someone to come round and explain how everything works ?! And set it up

I am in a right mess .

We have a boiler and an immersion tank .

Turned the tank off as this is what it said online to due to costs however now the boiler is only giving limited amounts of hot water ... enough for one shower .. not a full bath full

Any bright ideas anyone?!

Turn up the temperature on the hot water? Turn the water on for longer to make sure it is at temperature?

stevalnamechanger · 05/12/2022 20:50

It's all up in the loft so not very accessible .

I've ran the taps and nothing is happening just cold , doesn't seem to be heating

At a guess, I'd say you have a gas boiler that heats the radiators, and can also heat the water in the tank, as opposed to the more usual these days, a combi boiler that heats the radiators and provides hot water on demand, with no hot water storage tank. You may also have an electric immersion heater for the hot water tank; you can use this for hot water in the summer when the heating is off, and also to boost the heat of the hot water in the tank the rest of the year. You won't get a hot shower/bath until the water in the tank has been heated. There will be controls somewhere so that you can set the heating/water to come on and off at your preferred times, the switch for the electric immersion heater is usually in the cupboard the tank is in or somewhere near it.

WhatsitWiggle · 05/12/2022 20:55

Can you post photos of the boiler, tank and timing controls?

F4chrissakes · 05/12/2022 20:56

If you're heating the water using the gas boiler, it usually takes 1-2 hours to get a bath full. The electric immersion might be faster, but as it's electric it might be more expensive to run than the gas boiler for water heating,

dementedpixie · 05/12/2022 21:00

My boiler uses gas to heat the water in my hot water cylinder rather than it being an electric immersion heater.

Do you have feeder tanks in the loft too?

dementedpixie · 05/12/2022 21:02

Do you not have a control panel somewhere downstairs?; mine is in the kitchen. I have my hot water on for 1 hour per day and that gives me enough hot water for our needs.

F4chrissakes · 05/12/2022 21:03

Yes, we do. We have a header tank for the central heating, and a cold water tank which feeds the bathroom/cloakroom cold taps and also feeds the hot water tank.

F4chrissakes · 05/12/2022 21:04

Oops sorry, just realised that question was for the OP!

I think they are called heating engineers lol! Hope you get it sorted. Someone will be able to come out - maybe pay for a service

stevalnamechanger · 05/12/2022 21:32

This is what is next to the stairs and under it ...
Will get pics from the loft tomorrow .

I feel like I don't need a full engineer , just to hire a sensible adult tenured in these matters 🤣🤣

The first one is your timer for hot water and heating. You've got both on continuous at the moment. You might want to change the settings so both are on for a shorter amount of time

The 2nd is your room thermostat. 30⁰C is very high to have it set to

dementedpixie · 05/12/2022 21:42

www.google.com/amp/s/manuals.plus/honeywell/st9400c-7-day-two-channel-programmer-manual/amp

Think this is the manual for your timer

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 05/12/2022 21:42

If you Google the make and model of the programmer you can probably find a copy of the instructions to download.
Generally you want to programme it to produce heating first thing in the morning and again in the evening, plus hot water when you use that. Eg if you all have baths before bed, heat the water in the evening.

I see dementedpixie is ahead of me...

If it’s on full time on hearing and water and OP is not getting enough hot for a shower then there’s a problem somewhere!!!

dementedpixie · 05/12/2022 21:51

She said in the 1st post that she has switched something off up the loft so I'm assuming that's why nothing is being heated

dementedpixie · 05/12/2022 21:53

Is it the boiler you've switched off @stevalnamechanger? You will be using up the hot water in the cylinder and once that's gone you will only have cold water.

onemouseplace · 05/12/2022 21:54

We're moving this week and I don't understand how the system works at all, so I'm going to get a gas engineer in to give the boiler a service (and explain how it works to me at the same time).

moneythread · 05/12/2022 21:56

How hot is the house? The thermostat is very high, and the boiler on continuous. The house should be roasting.
Are you sure it was the immersion you switched off?

I wonder if its the boiler that's been turned off rather than an immersion switch. Dont suppose we'll know until tomorrow

JetBlackSteed · 05/12/2022 22:10

You are right to have wanted to turn the immersion heater off, as that heats the water in the immersion tank using electric and is an expensive way to heat it. When I was younger we had one in my parents house and it would be turned on for an hour in advance to heat enough water for a bath.
However, your pictures you've got the heating on and the thermoset set to 30. Your house should be roasting hot.

stevalnamechanger · 05/12/2022 22:41

So , DP said the tank has been turned off the boiler is on

The house is not hot , I whacked it up to try and bring it up warm so I think we do need it checking .

What I have been doing is leaving it on continuous , and turning up the thermostat when I want some additional heating on ... then turning to 10 the rest of the time ...

From reading the posts above perhaps I need to adjust this but just got here ( and came from somewhere very modern all controlled on smart set up with communal hot water)

What did happen was, waited 30 mins and then managed to run a bath fine so assume there wasn't enough in the system as you mentioned ( without turning on tank!)

Will check the loft again tomorrow !

I think this is what happened ^ but boiler wasn't off .. just used up

dementedpixie · 05/12/2022 23:00

You dont really need the hot water on continous so I'd look at changing those timings. My heating is set to be off overnight and also off for a good chunk during the day.
